Insurance Question

I've been looking into some 1982 Datsun 280zx and I'm really set on getting one. Now I don't know much about the car or cars period but I've been trying to brush up by taking classes and working with my grandpa. Which brings me to my question, I was talking to him about getting a 280zx as my first car and he said that they are reliable but then he went on to say that the insurance would be too expensive. I always had the idea that someone in my family could buy the car and I'd pay for insurance, gas and whatnot because being a teen always raises the price. He still said that was too expensive, I haven't really looked into it but I was wondering if you 280 owners could help me out and inform me on how much you guys pay. I know that each company is different but any information would help. Thanks in advance for any replies and sorry if I put this topic in the wrong section, I'm new to the site.

Moved to 280zx section.

Welcome to ZDriver! I pay ~$25/mo for my Z. It all depends on WHAT insurance you have, HOW clean your record is, WHERE you live, WHAT plan you buy, etc.

Why not call around and get some quotes? That will take all of 10 minutes to do.

I have 2 cars and I pay 60 bucks a month for both of them. I am 23 and married so, I do get that break. In GA a car 25 years or older is consided an antique, which makes the insurance cheaper. There are tons of prices breaks out there. If you have good grades in school and take a driving course that is certified by your state you can also get a price break. This all depends on you state and what insurance company you have so, listen to NismoPick and just make a ten min phone call to find out.

I am rooting for you get a 280zx, we need to keep them on the road!!

well you will find in states that are cheap in insurance you will have to make up in buying your tag and keeping up with the sticker. while in other states you will pay high insurance but low price on a tag.

I pay $34.83 for 100/300/100, zero deductable, and is insured for agreed value of $15,000 plus covers the first 125 miles emergancy flatbed towing.

the only catch you have to be 25yrs of age, and it can't be a daily driver

My friends get pissed at how little I pay for insurance. The ones my age live in NJ and the ones in Utah are all under 25. Plus I'm a professional driver and military: loads of discounts.

BTW, My record high was $650 a month for insurance. (Firebird, NJ, under 25, 3 speeding tickets)
Now I pay $65 a month for 3 cars in Utah and $50 a year for my bike.

No, Progressive. USAA can't compete with the fact that I've been with Prog for years (more discounts) plus all my friends who have USAA keep telling me horror stories about when they actually need to utilize their plans.

Plus Progressive lets me insure my Trans-AM for an appraised value and not the book.

I think Seattle must have super high insurance rates.

10 years ago I was paying $120 a month for basic liability on a non-turbo 280ZX. That was a good rate then.
Since then, with a perfect record, and no tickets I could never get any insurance company to give me a rate better than $75 a month. $25 a month is ridiculous!
Granted it doesn't cost much more to add comp and collision on an older cheap car... but liability around here is expensive.
These days, at 30 years old and no tickets, I still pay about that much for full coverage on a 350Z.

Basically, it would not have mattered if I drove a 280ZX or a Datsun 210 wagon... still would have been $120/month. If I drove a TURBO z then that would have made a difference.

Alright, let me throw in some more info-
I have less than 2 years driving experience, and a single male in 16-25 means I am in a high-risk group. I am a college student with good grades, so I get a discount for that. I have no tickets or the like, so I get a clean-record discount. I have medium-coverage, with $5,000 of car damage coverage (when the car cost me $600 ), and a few G's of hospital coverage, etc... Oh yeah, I'm in Cali.
I'm paying $55 dollars a month o.O
