Insurance...Don't know what to do.

So I got a letter in the mail today wanting proof of insurance as of 10/4/06 on my 2+2 that was wrecked a couple months ago. Right after the accident we just dropped the insurance, but Ohio wants proof that I had coverage on the specific date of 10/4. The original policy would have run out in September anyway, they don't want cards showing dates that expired prior to 10/4/06. The car didn't even run, and the car is gone from my garage anyway. Man this sucks, I don't know what to do. Hopefully I can clear all this up. The letter makes no mention as to what if the car had been sold or was in the process of being sold. Hopefully I don't get screwed and end up with a suspended license...

If the title had been signed over prior to that date I imagine that I could have used that, but the title was signed by me just a few days ago. The guy had towed it back on the 1st.

If you still own the car, just go to DMV and let them know that the car is "being worked on, and on jacks". Worst case scenario is that the insurance company drops you and DMV revokes your registration...

Anyone else have info on this???

As long as you're not operating the vehicle without insurace I dont think they can revoke your license. Like Carl said they'll probably just negate your registration and force you to either provide proof of insurance, proof of sale, or to register the car as non-operable (if your state does that). Since you sold the car then there really isn't anything they can do. If you filled out a bill of sale then make a copy of it or if your title has a removable transfer of ownership stub (depends on your state) then bring that to the DMV with you. Either way, the car isn't yours anymore and you had insurance when the car was wrecked and you can simply inform them that the car was rendered inoperable by the accident and so you recently sold it.

In some places the insurance company is required to notify the DMV if your insurance lapse' and you dont renew the policy. So they may just now be getting around to notifying you that you need insurance or your registration will be revoked.

if you got your insurance thru a broker, the broker /agent will have a record and is able to zip one out of the computer for you--i am able to drive top my agent's office top do that--very easy--try that angle. i am NEVER able to locate my papreworx--try my trix.....they work.

-also--if you have proof of having had an accident, send that in, tell them car was not able to be driven, not totalled--do not risk having to go thru salvage balderdash and malarky--makes mayhem look like kids play. good luck
