Research. There's lots of info on this site & the www about 280zx mods & upgrades. Is your Z a turbo? Do you want to spend A LOT of money? Do you want to go really fast?

Go to a diff shop. It's not like OEM mufflers aren't replaceable... They would just chop it out & weld in a new one.

And a bigger exhaust alone won't do anything good for you.

Larger exhaust? It's not bad when done correctly and in combination with other upgrades. You should read this book:

I got the MSA exhaust too but i put on a header with it and mine still has plenty of jump. Do you have a cold air intake on it too? It has to breathe in just as well as it breathes out. I also took out the cat and bypassed the egr valve too. It has a lot more top end power now. New cam is going on in a couple of weeks!!!

Better flowing exhaust can do good things even if you change nothing else. It lowers potential engine temps, and mkaes for a better sound. Normally increases mileage. But, that depends on your foot. And with the factory induction system, I would not expect miracles. Mostly top end.

Put some triple weber carbs one, with a nice big cam, a good header, and free flowing exhaust, and expect more. But, it's all in the $$$. Unless you get lucky like I did. lol

I am curious if there is some good flow bench testing between various makes and models of mufflers. I have found a few numbers.
I know flowmaster is not anywhere near the top. Better than stock. But, they have the best sound. imho.
