i raced my car and then my car made some noise and it did not want to go so i pulled over. it was steaming. it did not turn back on. i had dropped my car in to gear 1 like a dumb ***. its an auto. now i really blow it.

how much would a brand new tranny cost?

If I were you I'd convert it to a five speed.

My first oops was burning off in reverse with a five speed. BAD idea. Not once but two different times. I feel your pain.

Anyway, you may like the top speed increase and you'll find the conversion is
relatively cheap. Any questions just ask. Either way you want to go.

 

There is a guy in West LA (Culver City) who would rebuilt your Trans (auto) for $1500 with 18000 miles or 18 months warranty.
My bro-in-law just got it done for his trans (84 300zx), he is very happy with it,
If you can't get anything good, I would recommend him.

I suggest taking it to a shop as it sounds like you aren't too car savvy.

 

if it won't start and is steaming, you probably blew the head gasket, and who knows what else. you didn't happen to hear a lot of heavy clanking coming from in front of you and see some flames come out from under the hood or anything did you? get it running before you say that the tranny is bad.

 

car doesnt start... steaming.... hmmmmm.... i dont know if a blown tranny would stop the car from starting, time to start testing things broski you mightve done worse than the tranny. will these old auto trannies drop to first at any speed if you smack the selector down there? if so you mightve over revved the motor. which can cause all sorts of fun.

i think its pretty safe to say you fail at cars.
a broken tranny wouldnt cause steam.

i think its time if you want the car to continue to tow it some place and have them rebulid the thing as it probally needs it now both engine and transmission.

I'm still not clear from your post exactly what went on during your "race," but if you were racing (assuming 1/4 miling) how did you shift back into 1st? The gates are lined up so that one click up is 2nd and one more is D... Pretty hard to miss a shift. For what it's worth, you didn't do a neutral slam off the line did you?

If your Z is steaming, you most likely over revved your motor like Snw was saying. That might have damaged the valves because valve float is already a problem with a stock L motor. Anyway, good luck and hope you get it fixed.

 

valve float... ouchey... and guys we can make assumptions but lets not flame him. not like he said something retarded deserving, though what he did not saying it was smart either lol.

 

I beat the crap out of my '82 auto alot...revved it to 6,800rpm all the time in first and second, power braking here and there. I never let the car shift on its own cause it would be in third at 20mph...it had issues but never complained when I beat on it...I think he did something really wrong for it to break.

 

Meh.. Not all trannys are created equal. Who knows what it went through first.

WIth that in mind. I knew a guy once that was making out with this chick. He went down below, and found out she/he/it was a tranny.
He messed she/he/it up too.


Sometimes there is nothing else to do with a tranny.

That's why you keep to manually controlling your stick with one hand. Then you have no one to blame but yourself when things get out of control, or it breaks.

No one likes a steaming leaky tranny.

Why is it whenever I read a story like this the "tranny" gets messed up....I bet that 80% of the time the guy lets the "tranny" do its thang...

 

He claimed he didn't... My group of friends will never live it down no matter what..
He did look very surprised, and sick... He was not right for a few weeks. He got married recently, and it made for some interesting conversations with his wife that I just met in person. hahaha

LOL dont feel tooo bad my x gurlfriend took my 1983 280zx n.a. auto tranny on the free way going 65 mph and slaped it in reverse ! holy $%^& what a crazy moment ! never the less i slaped it back into drive " she was driving " i did give her the car for 500 bucks after that moment ! Krazy gurl 280zx's are for men..

The autos will not shift back down into 1st until you're below a certain speed. You can manually shift them like thxone said, and I've beaten on my trans a bit. Manually shifting, reving it to redline. Actually that's one of the reasons I started using my mallory ignition. To prevent me from overrevving. Also I set my mallory's rev limiter lower than the Z31 ECU rev limiter. It's better to cut spark than fuel....

 

wont stop you from manually over revving a motor though like dropping it to low of a gear

 

if all of this is based off of your z31 then it probally doesent apply becuase its a smarter car
