How hard is it this swaqp???

How hard would it be to swap this into an 79 280zx . I have an R200 now but what I want is an LSD ( Dont we all???) So I went to the Pick n Pull in my area and found a few 240's with what looks like an R200 and LSD would it be hard to swap that into my 280 zx if I took the whole rear end axles and all. The vehicle is a 4lug so kinda curious. I can get the whole rear end for about 100 bucks so would be great if I could do the swap without to many modifications.

If it's a 240Z with a R200 then it wouldn't be a difficult swap at all. Don't bother with anything but the diff though. The axles probably wont work on the ZX and since you already have the R200 everything on your car will just bolt right up, axles and all. Make sure it's an R200 first though with LSD. Are you sure?

Alright... I think we all need a quick lesson about LSD's to stop the confusion. The 240 - 280z had a smaller differential than the 280zx's & Z31's. That differential was an R160 & quite a few mod's are needed to fit an R200 into a 240z. NONE OF THE 240Z - 280ZX'S HAD AN LSD DIFF IN THEM FROM THE FACTORY. Nissan put an R200 LSD in the 87 - 89 300zx turbos, but the 88 SS had a viscous LSD which uses special cv connections which turn out to be a pain to convert. So... for anyone that wants an LSD... you must get it from an 87 - 89 Z31T Non SS model.

240sx's actually use a completely different differential. I believe they are called the R230??? You would indeed have to swap out the entire rear end suspension to make it work. I've only seen a few of those swaps. I know Darius did a 300zxtt rear end swap into his SC V8 240Z. ICICE9 posted a couple JDM 280zx's that have the 300zxtt rear in them too. I'm sure it's a nightmare to do, so I'd stick w/ the Z31T LSD idea personally... I did it on mine & I'm very happy w/ it.

Could always go aftermarket too. That way atleast you know you're getting a good one and not one thats been abused for 150k miles. With all the time and money you'd put into a conversion, it'd be easier in the long run just to buy one made for your existing diff. But where there's a will there's a way, and any part can be made to fit any car with enough will. (Note: By 'will' I mean MONEY )

240Z's and the 260Z had an R180. The 1975+ 280Z had an R200 3.54 in all models. 280ZX had a combination of R180 and R200 depending on the transmission and year.

240SX is another story.
