you know, dont!

 

i posted earlier that my zx would start but then die out at idle but keep running when giving it gas. i finally had time to look into it today and noticed a knocking noise. i reached and wiggled the belts and the crank pulley was loose, tore it apart to get to the pulley and the bolt is secure but the pulley spins freely and moves a lot.

What could be bad?

i do not have the right size socket to pull the bolt to see whats making it so loose.

anyone know what size the bolt is? i had a 1in socket and a 24mm and both were too small

 

Merged threads so we can continue on the same original issue w/o guessing what the problem was.

 

Should be a 27mm crank pulley bolt. If it's loose, you've probably lost the key or ground the keyway loose. To fix that means you get to pull the crank and take it to a machine shop.

 

i was hoping you would not say that. i have a crank sitting around i could just swap it out. i was hoping i can just swap over the one part on the crank i have to fix it.

i might start thinking about a motor swap now if it gets to the point where i need to take out the crank

You can't replace the key with the crank in the block?
Depending on how chewed up it got, I know.

i have no cash to work on it now...so it will be there..LOL..i will get the right size socket i hope to pull off the pulley to see the damage and go from there.

who on here has done a V8 swap? what is a realistic price on the swap?

 

you crazy? i lost the key in my crank for the pulley i just get a new key from napa and popped it in the crank (lost one in the timing cover in the process) and put the pulley back on. its hard but is very do-able

 

Did you start the car w/ no key? I'm just saying... on his, if the pulley is loose & the motor has been spinning, it has likely walked the key back and forth into a nice V.

 

so i will probably need a new pulley as well, good thing i have a crank sitting here to test it on to see what i need to do

 

I will not help do a V8 swap unless it's a Nissan V8..

my pulley was missing a chunk of its metal meat right where the key was so it just flew right out! lol.

 

The crank is a harder steel. It might survive longer than the pulley. Hopefully that is the case.

 

still working on a big enough socket to take off the bolt

 

Damn.. I know I have one big enough. I have wobblies that go to 1 and 1/2 inches.
But, they are in the mine I worked at, and I need a truck to get my tools. lol. I don't feel like driving back up to Bagdad either.

 

also that bolt is on TIGHT!!!!! i had to get out my breaker bar with extension and then put the car in gear and chock the wheels lol! dont ask why i didnt just use the hand brake.....

I have some serious breaker bars too. And pry bars, and mallets, hammers, dead blows, you name it. Haven't had a bolt kick my *** yet.
Bolts tend to get tight over the years on these cars too. Especially steel in steel. Heat helps.

 

well i got the whole front end off so plenty of room to get in there...

i gonna see if someone at work has some bigger sockets tonight.

didnt have to take the front end off... might have more room but you coulda gotten away with not doing so and just coming at it from under neath

 

i want to start to rattle can the paint to get rid of that brown crap the guy had before, so this was a good time to take it all off and do it right. on payday i will run to autozone there is one around the corner they loan tools for free. maybey they have it

 

OK..i got the bolt off....the pulley cracked and busted off. i have to get the chain cover off to see what else may have happen. so now i have a few questions..

1. to remove the oil pump it says to put the crank at the highest compression then remove the pump, do i really need to do this it i do not move the crank at all and make sure i do not move the distributor?

2. are there 1 or 2 keys on the crank to hold the pulley and gears in? it 2 and the outside one is gone..can it be replaced

3. can u just remove the oil pan and get the crank off from the bottom or do u need to remove the whole engine or just the head?

4. besides oil pump and water pump..what else should i replace while i am doing this...

 

removing the oil pump you need the number one cylinder at top dead center for when you re-install it. basically the first piston at its top stroke with the cam not touching any rockers. the lobes pointing straight up in the air

theres only one key

you will have to remove the motor but its an easy job your mostly there already

replace the gaskets obviosly while your at it. thats it really though.
