Ok, does anyone have any experience changing out the tumbler assembly only on an '82?? Someone tried to steal my Z and I'm pretty sure they didn't mess up the switch, but only the tumbler cylinder. If I can figure out how to get it out while the whole thing is still on the column, it would be a good thing. It looks as though you could get it out the front after taking off the front housing and the printed collar (one that has "Lock-off-acc-on-start" on it). Got the front cover(s) off. Now just have to figure out how to get it to come out...

I did this on an '82 Datsun 210 a couple days ago - they both have the same iggy switch. There's two ways you could go about it ... 1 being to drill out the little pin on the bottom left that holds the tumbler itself inside the assembly, or 2 is to beat the **** out of it until everything falls apart.
Since I didn't have the patience or required tools for option 1, number 2 was more feasible. If I were to take the time to do this right, it would be relatively simple (it's just that damned pin!), and much much neater (I still can't get all the metal flakes out of the carpet ...).
By all means, do option 1!
By the way, nice z! It looks awesome with the white-letter tires on, and the paint is shibby! It looks to me like its lowered slightly, about an inch ... yes / no?

 

ya know, i want to do a true pushbutton start, but i want to do away with the ignition switch all together... some kind of pin pad or somethin... ive seen it done... wow that would be cool

Do it! I'll just have to remember 762658 when I'm around your neck of the woods ...
All you'd have to do is get rid of the tumbler and steering lock mechanism, add a couple switches or wire up that pad, and presto, an electronic ignition! Wait, that name is already taken ...
