Fuel Pump Differences.

Fuel Pump Differences.
Alright, there's a ZXT for sale a little ways away from me. Now the ad claims that it runs, but it needs a fuel pump. Is there a difference between the turbo and the N/A fuel pump? Would a Turbo even be able to run on a n/a fuel pump. Cus If I could just swap my pump into that one to just test it out, it'd be worth a look. Otherwise I dunno if I'm about to go buy a fuel pump just to hope that's what the car needs. It's an 83 Turbo that is claimed to be in good condition. Said it was recently repainted, so that's a thing to possibly be wary of. It has 85,132 miles on the car and they want $1500 for it. I'm thinking of going to check it out period and if the rest of it happens to be in good condition then it might be worth it to buy and get running. They say the car will start right up, but cannot be driven because of the fuel pump. Any suggestions?

The pumps will interchange. But the turbo pump flows more. I drove my turbo on the na pump up until I did the engine swap. If you just want to test the car out then yes, you can swap them. But I'd stay out of boost just to be on the safe side. My turbo stumbled a lot with the NA pump if I tried to accelerate up a hill or go WOT. I just kept the throttle mild and it did alright.

This is all I figured. Like I said, I'd pull the pump from my N/A just to see if that makes the car run. If it did, for $1500 assuming in good condition, it'd be worth it to then just pick up a turbo pump.

I would take the car home and do the test. Then I would swap the pumps back and go back and offer less money, since they could not guarantee that the pump would fix the problem. People usually have some wiggle room in their price. If they are firm, then get them to knock off the price of a new turbo pump and seal the deal. I paid $650 for a practically rust free '83 with 109,000 miles, of course it took me almost a year to find it. The guys starting price was $1000. But if the car is what you want $1500 is a GREAT price ! Never pay asking price unless you have to!

Don't forget that the 82 and 83 have a separate fuel pump controller that changes speed according to conditions.
This controller has been known to cause problems.
Also.......this controller, if eliminated, can cause emission problems as it slows down the pump at idle.

The module is meant to extend pump life and lower pump noise at idle.

It's not a gold mine if the fuel pump is just a cover for a damaged engine or something serious like that

not if that engine damage is going to cost you more then the car is worth to fix. No sence in dropping $1500 on the car to find out it's got internal damage thats going to require him to tear the motor down and start replacing internals and end up spending more then he would've spent on a perfect 280zx turbo. I've looked at a lot of cars that didn't start cause a part was missing only cause the owner removed that part to cover up a more serious problem.
Of course, if the guy is willing to let him replace the pump then it's probably not serious. But I still wouldn't just jump on a Z for $1500 that didnt run if I didn't know what was wrong with it. He's got the chance to verify first and I think that's the smart way to do it.
