my engine started making a ticking noise louder then usual, i think its the injectors because when i do the stethoscope test with a screwdriver i can here the ticking and also i can here it threw the fuel rail. when i unplug an injector 1 at a time the noise slightly goes away. is there another easy way to test the injectors?

Yeah, you don't have hydraulic lifters.

You can check the gap right now w/ feeler gauges... then you'll know if they are making the noise / needing adjustment.

Indeed. Cold is:

.007in / .17mm intake / .009in / .24mm exhaust Page 26 of the Haynes manual.

I used to do a "mad dash" trying to adjust them hot. Then one time I loosened them all at the beginning, then adjusted them one by one. That gave me more time.

Ideally you want to adjust them hot, because metal expands when hot (aka running temp) so the adjustments will be more accurate.

It depends on how well they have been treated... but they should last as long as the motor.
