ECU messing up?

For the last few months my 82 280zxt willl run good one weekend and not good the next. Not really run bad, just doesn't have the power that it should. I have check, replace, or rebuild AFM, TPS, CHTS, spark plug wires, cap rotor, fuel presure, vacum lines and I'm sure theres more. Sometimes when I think I fixed it, the next weekend it runs crappy again. While searching online, on a nissan site, someone said that there Z does this once in a while and they have to unplug the battery, then unplug ECU, then plug them back in. So I tried it and it seemed to have worked, well for now at least.

Does any one else have a problem like this?

Is the problem really the ECU or is there another problem causing the ECU ot mess up?

Any insite on this would be great.

You might also check the ignition module which is attached to the distributer. That sounds what mine was doing in the early stages of the module going bad...

Where did you find a new ignition module? I can't find one. It's unavailable. I'm thinking of switching to the HEI module. But I have heard good and bad things about it.

check on your battery system. Z's don't like low voltage causes all sorts of gremlins.

How does the HEI run at higher RPMs?
She's got new battery, cables, and alternator.

I see HEI modules run perfectly fine at 7-8k RPM all the time. For about $100 you can get an MSD module with a built in rev limiter and a bunch of other features.

I have a Mallery 6l with a built in rev limiter. But you still have to wire that through the stock module, inless I have it hooked up wrong.

You're talking about an ignition box, I'm talking about an MSD HEI module. It wires into a magnetic crank trigger and to the coil. It replaces your ignition module.

Do you have the Malory hooked up already? If so did you try running it without the Malory?

Try running without it and can you hook the Malory up bypassing the ignitor?

Yup I'm running one on my test mule right now. Works just fine. There is a write up on it but they are missing hooking up the blue wire to the negative side of the coil on the stock harness. If you keep it hooked up to the driver transistor the HEI will not work. If you leave it disconnected your tach won't work.

So you are saying that either your tach works or that HEI? Got a link for that write up? And maybe a part number. And my tach works off and on, and jumps around ever sense I part on the Mallory. Got any ideas about that? I was thinking I need a higher amp alternator.
