Dyno'd my 240Z this week!

This probably belongs in the 1st Gen Z forum, but I don't ever talk to those guys...

Came out pretty good for 158,000+ mile car.

116 hp & 121 ft/lbs of torque. I left the printout at my office so I don't have the rpm's where these peak #'s were hit, but we ran it all the way to 7000 rpm but that was a waste of time. The second and third runs only took it to 6500.

I'm thinkin' it'll pick up another 5 to 8 hp and a little bit less torque with the new ZTherapy carbs...

Oh well, not quite enough to beat the Honduh...

It's kind of funny to finally see some real numbers from a 240Z. It kinda ruins all those arguments that say the 240Z was better because it had more horsepower .

Remember that the car is now 30+ years old & the factory specs are flywheel hp.

Oh yeah, I definitely know that, but I know in arguments over whether which is better, the numbers 150 hp for the 240Z always come up.

That's because those people don't know what they're talking about. They see the numbers, but don't comprehend their meaning.

Arguably, the 280ZX is the pinnacle of the L6 series' factory consumer based development and was the most powerful L6 ever offered from Nissan. Some of this performance is hampered by the additional weight associated with the many luxuries available on the ZX.

The 140hp from the NA 280ZX is roughly equivalent to 180hp based on the same method of calculation used on the 240z's.

That 116 whp is roughly equivalent to 145 crank hp which indicates this car has only lost about 5hp after 34 years and 158,000 miles which is pretty damn good.

The new carbs, even without porting, will easily make up that difference as I've got a leaky throttle shaft on my front carb that makes it's mixture vary under different vacuum loads. The porting will probably give me another several hp, but more importantly, better throttle response and it'll let the motor breath into higher rpm's. Right now, it does the typical Z car power drop off at 5200 rpm. The new carbs should let it breath into the 6200 to 6500 range.

What forum was this again?

Sounds like you want someone to ask:

and you can't because why?

You can find shops that dont charge too much to just slap your car on a dyno to get a baseline number. It's when you have to start paying by the hour to tune it on the dyno that it gets expensive. Dont get me wrong, it's not neccessarily the cheapest endeavor, but most places will cut you a deal for just a single pull. The trick is start talking to them and casually work your way into how you've been wanting to get your car dyno'd to see what you're putting down Dont walk in and say "can you dyno my car for free?"

Chances are if they're cool they'll hook you up for cheap.

Damn, thats cold

No I'm not saying they're going to put you on for next to nothing. But the hourly rate some shops charge for dyno tuning can be a little high when all you want is to get some numbers. A single dyno pull doesn't have to run as much as a tuning session. For example: I've been to shops that offer a 3-4 pull dyno package. Well what if you dont need 3-4 pulls? I'd rather not pay the outrageous price of tuning my car on the dyno when alls I want is a one pull printout. Thats what I mean by cheap. I've yet to ever visit a shop that has an advertised price for a single dyno pull with printout that wasn't having a special event. I've always had to ask and even then they discourage you before giving a figure. But I have been able to talk my way into getting a flat one pull fee instead of paying for a tuning session. Dyno's arent cheap and I'm sure all's an owner wants to do is get his money's worth before the thing retires so getting a deal on dyno time isn't always possible.

years ago when I dynoed my car it was $75 for 20 min.

The Z club of WA has been going to the same place for years and I think they give is a small price break each year. its down to $55 now but I have not been since 2000.

Talking

My N/A 1982 Automatic 280zx Coupe would pull some good numbers on a dyno...it has freshly painted wipers arms (All Three!!!) thats good for 47hp at the wheels, a freshly painted factory air filter box (That's right, Factory baby!) good for no less then 71hp at the wheels, all tint has been removed saving at least 120lbs, Gold paint w/red and black interior...good for 113hp at the wheels, and speaking of wheels did you all check out my vintage Eagle Hammer rims? Yes they are good for 26hp apiece at themselves. Thats an extra 335hp on top of the factory hp that must be close to 250hp. I can't wait to get to a dyno myself to prove this. I have the fastest street legal Z on the planet or will as soon as I get my ground effects and wing, I have heard from a guy with a Honduck that you can get at least 190hp with properly tuned ground Fx. One day I hope to be near 900hp but I will need an old school cell phone antenna. Of course I am kidding.

Huh... Did i mention that the freaking machine alone cost 75 THOUSAND DOLLARS? Or, that every couple of months it costs a couple thousand more in maintenance?

Sorry folks, people that don't have to pay for all this nifty equipment are really good at bitching about the cost to use it.

I have a new motto in life... "If it cost too much, You're too cheap"

I'm not picking on you SHADY, I just go through explaining stuff like this every day to people who seem to think that they shouldn't have to pay a fair price for the services they get because they don't understand the true "cost" of doing business in a shop like mine.

So, for anyone who hates paying too much for dyno pulls... I can get you the name and phone number of the company I got my dyno from and you can get one of your very own! On a good lease plan, you may only have to pay about 2.5K per month! WooHoo!!!!

^ Because I have a seperate "Service and Smog" only shop attached to the tire store... The dyno is for smog testing but is capable of doing HP runs as well...

Anyone that calls themselves "Big Daddy" is compensating for a "little daddy"...

If they get the nick name from the press or somewhere else, then it's a legitimate nick name... ie. "Big Daddy" Don Garlits. He earned it.

Rod, Do you give tuning packages though?? Or a dyno day, for the local Z car guys. Or if the old 3kgt actually makes another trip down that way, 3 pulls for a hundred??? I absolutly hate the 1 dyno place we have locally and absolutly refuse to use em. So all my tuning is done on the street
