Thumbs up Drifting?

Does anyone here drift in their s130? I have given up getting more power out of my car and have decided to build it into a drift car. So Im getting my Knoig Rewinds and Tokico springs from MSA in like a week and was wondering what kind of tires I should get. Someone recommended Yokohama AVS es100s but im worried that theyll be so grippy that I wont be able to slip the tires due to my weak motor. So does anyone know of good drifting tires for a 280zx?

get some used bald tires that hold air and still have some tread left and practice.

Is your engine in good running condition?
you have a 5-speed manual trans and an LSD already, right? If not, get those first!

Speaking Of Lsd, Where Can You Get Reasonable Priced Units, For Those Who Dont Know? Msa's Seem To Be Extemely High Priced To Me Compared To Other Diff Brands, Ie Mazda Toyota Ford Etc.

Ebay from $500 - $800.... or a junk yard for $100 (but I guarantee you won't find one in a junk yard)

R200 LSD's came in the 87 - 89 Z31T. All are clutch type, except the 88 SS model, which came w/ the viscous LSD (uses different cv inputs).

EDIT... MSA's "Nismo LSD" is rated @ 45lbs of break away torque. I was about to order one from them, but the guy @ MSA that I was talking to said that the Nismo LSD isn't going to give excelent drifting results. He said to go w/ the Quaife LSD (around $1500 just for the carrier). I'm happy w/ my Z31 LSD tho.

that doesn't sound right... The S13's & S14's used the R230 which is shorter & fatter than the R200...

240sx R230:

280zx & Z31 R200:

You can use the S13 - S14 differential, but you need to use the whole S13 - S14 suspension. As for just using the LSD carrier.... has anyone measured their dimentions to see if the R230 & R200 are the same size?

But the exterior diminsions of the R230 in relation to the R200, for the most part, have nothing to do with whether or not that unit will fit inside the R200. Pretty much as long as the ring gears between the two diffs are the same then this should just bolt right in. But the question is are they the same? Cuase that's one hell of a deal for an LSD unit.

And if the CV shaft splines are the same as the R200.... if not, you'd have to use the S13 CV's... and are those the same length as the 280zx?

True. I'm going to have to check this out next time I hit up the junk yard. Not many S14's around, but there are plenty of S13's sitting in the local pick n pull. And I have a spare R200 with CV's laying here that I can take some measurements off of to compare to the R230.

What happend if I try to drift with my stock diff? Will the car oversteer and I wont be able to slide when accelerating? Oh and I thought the 280zx had a good diff?

Stock diff is an "open differential," so the wheel that slips gets the most power (good for helping the driver not lose control, not good for performance driving). So if you try to drift, you'll just kinda drive in a circle & kick the rear out a lil... looking like a goof.

The 280zx does have a good diff.... a good "open diff."

Ok now this just turned into a thread on Diffs. Just wanted to know If I am wasting my time trying to build my 280zx into a drifter? Im just doing suspension work so far.

The basic part of REAL drifting is an LSD diff.... thas why we're all talking about it.

BTW... just came across this: it's a viscous, but still LSD.

yes, the lsd on the z31s had a finned cover. LSD came on the '87-'89 turbos.

LSD, lowered, camber and toe out in the rear, tight springs, thick sway bars. That rearend will break loose easy. If you can't afford an LSD, then you can't afford to drift. You'll be buying tires every month anyway...

Well I already ordered the Tokico Springs and Struts form MSA, are those good? I plan on getting the Cusco rear strut bar (will I need a front strut bar too?) but what about for camber and toe adjustment where do I get those parts? And I will have to get the LSD off a Z31? Cant I just buy a LSD from a site or they dont make LSDs for 280zx? Oh yeah now I do know I need a LSD I dropped the clutch today in reverse to see what happens and what do you know! Only my left rear tire made any tire marks the right side was totally clean as if the tire didnt even move!

Yes MSA ( zcarparts.com ) sells a couple LSD units for the 280zx. Both are kind of expensive though. The Z31 unit is just a lower cost alternative. You can pick up a 300ZX turbo for less than MSA sells those LSD's for Then you get the diff and you can do the ECU/EFI swap and water cooled turbo

-Tokico = good.
-Strut bars = good.
-Camber kits... MSA still makes front kits, no one makes rears anymore (up to your own fabbing for the rear).
-LSD... Dunno what web site you were talking about, but you have 3 basic choices (Z31 LSD, Nismo, or Quaife) as I have previously mentioned in this thread:
