Distributorless ignition for my next Mega Squirt project :)

Bought this setup - time to clean it up and build a harness

Trigger

OK, you have my full interest. What does the triggering ? or where are you getting your timing signal from ? Did you attach the coils to the valve cover ? because it is a very clean looking install. And lastly do you expect to pick up any ponies or advantage with a more modern setup ?
The question of a distributorless ignition was posted by someone a while back and I kind of dismissed it, because I had no idea one existed.

did you buy this setup off of HBZ?
Distributorless ignition can be done with MSnS or whatever that megasquirt acronym is. You can get the trigger wheel off of the megasquirt site with everything else, or from a wrecked ford with eids. and that is about the extent of my knowledge on the subject

I'll be running Mega Squirt 3 with the MS3X daughter card to control the spark

This is my old setup which I still have but it's not exactly the way I wanted it set up.

The triggering is from a replacement optical encoder wheel. The 82-83 dizzy had two separate tracks for the optical encoder. One with give you TDC and the other will give you timing. That's all you need to know when to fire each individual coil. The coils are mounted on the valve cover with stand offs.

You're not going to gain ponys but you have the advantage of a hotter spark as the LS coil packs are one of the hottest sparks from a stock system and they are controlled by a low voltage signal as they have their own individual ignitor built in. With the hotter spark you're going to have less of a chance of a misfire which will cause you to loose power. It's also more resistant to being blown out in a turbo car. You're really adding performance protection rather than gaining anything (although a good spark makes sure all the fuel is burnt maximizing your performance but your stock system should be up to the task if everything is performing correctly).

Cap

So you will still use a distributor to run the optical sensor, you wont need a stock cover for the dizzy, can we look forward to some trick part to cover the works up ? So to paraphrase, if I am following...The optical sensor will send a signal to the MS3X daughter card which will in turn pulse a signal to the appropriate igniter.

It looked like you had a lot of the harness together. A full megasquit kit is still fairly expensive, I am sure you do all your soldering, it a lot of fun to get a kit built and working. My neighbor was a TV repairman, and his boys were more into RC cars and planes, so I got all of they're heathkits to learn on and an old electronic experiment kit with bread boards and odd parts, photo cells and crystals so you could make a radio, I was in love with it from the start.

look what i found fricfrac!! lq9 coils instead of my ford idea, this looks to be logic level coils so no other modules required. set of coils is 100 box most places and just need a set of is300 boot to mount them right on the spark plugs

ignition coil upgrade to gm lq9 coils

there are also these coils too. gm seems to be the best option for logic coils, with a really good spark.
