I have a 1980 280zx and i finally got it running but only when i have it rigged to where the rotor sits high enough to hit the points on the cap.I have the correct cap and rotor for my year car and ive tried one from an 83 280zx but same problem.What would cause this?

Dont feel bad my 1982 280zxt has distributor problems too but unlike your mine needs a new distributor why ? i think it might be because i washed the engine bay and forgot to cover up the eletrical parts DUH ! but yea the car runs fine for about 25 min. then the car will die and not start . Im saving up for a new dissy.
