Dash Light Nightmare

Hey guys, I have an 81 Turbo and im getting a major headache over my dash lights. I thought the issue was the dimmer switch but now I'm not so sure.
I got out the old Haynes manual and started studying the wiring diagrams and it seems like everything (cluster lights, oil pressure, boost, clock, HVAC, cruise control, and rear defrost, and make up light) are all wired in a series. Everything also ties into a SACD switch, whatever that is. My problem is the lights work pretty much when they want to and they aren't as bright as they should be. The make up light, though, works all the time and is bright. I checked the pins on the plug for the cluster and they are getting power. The lights will also work whether the dimmer switch is plugged in or not, and they are always fairly dim. Also, the tach doesn't work. All other lights on the dash (warning lights, high beam, turn signals, and the diagnostic light work all the time) So, power to everything, cluster and gauge lights work intermittently, and everything else works as it should.

Anyone have any ideas?
