can anyone with a 280zx tell me this...
In the key position right before cranking the engine, are you able to operate the windows/mirrors/radio/etc? For me, in 2 positions before that, they all work, but then I turn it once more, everything goes off (including tach, and most idiot lights, fuel gauge) and the fuel light comes on sometimes, along with the "fasten seatbelts" light. (i dunno what the name of the positions are since I dont have an actual key lock thingy, just the switch).
All the wires are wired right I'm sure, and none of the fuses are blown. Is there some special relay that controls this or what?

yes, they should all work. The position right before cranking (after you crank, it is spring loaded to go back to this position) is the ON position. Everything should have power there. That is the position you keep it in while you drive. Right before that is Accesory position wich lets you use the radio. Before that is Off, and then turned way down is the Lock position which engauges that little steering wheel lock.
In your engine compartment on the front right side, there is a plastic box. Snap off the cover and it should have about 6 relays inside that you can unplug. Pull two out and swap them. Turn the key around and see if there was any change. If not, swap the same two back and try another two. Do this untill you have found the bad relay. That may or may not be the correct relay though. There are others hidden in various locations behind the dash.

yeah ive "checked" the relays, as in swapped them for my parts car which had shinier ones in anticipation. i always end up posting a topic before i look into a problem to deeply. or i get into a problem without checking to see if its actually the problem... sigh, anyway, thanks alot for the info.
