boost problems

i have an 83 zx turbo and is set up perfect for 12 lbs. of boost. i recently installed a manual boost controller and have been having trouble keeping consistent boost. if i really get on it 1st gear is fine i will have decent boost throughout the whole gear then 2nd gear it will spool up to 12 lbs. then drop back down to stock boost and it will either stay at stock or climb up to 9 lbs. same for all other gears. i just don't get it. i went to the track last night and ran 14.9 @96 3 times and the boost was so inconsistent and i know i can run better than that. if anyone has an idea of what the problem might be please tell me b/c it is annoying the hell out of me.

What kind of manual boost controller is it? A lot of those MBC's aren't reliable & your boost will go all over the place. Electronic boost controllers acurately control it. Also... did you remove the emergency release valve from the intake manifold?

yes i already plugged the pop off valve. but i am using a shitty mbc i got from ebay a long time ago. i am guessing that is my problem. i want to get a electronic boost controller but i am not sure which one to get. also is the installation easy for an electronic boost controller. and should i buy a blow off valve if i am runnig 12lbs of boost b/c i think that would hellp my turbo spool alot faster. i dont kno which one to get either

Name brand is the key... don't by cheap crap stuff you've never heard of. I bought an HKS EBC on ebay about 3 years ago for $150. A bov will help keep the turbo spooled, again go w/ a name brand one & make sure it has a flange you can use on your setup (to fit the j-pipe or IC piping if you have one). I bought an XSPower er TurboXS RFL BOV a while back... I like it, and it holds pressure (I run 12psi). Whatever you decide to buy, just do research on the part first.

Recirc will help a lil more in keeping the turbo spooled, but it's more work getting it plumbed in... most people just run vented.

EBC is pretty easy to install. Basic wiring & a couple vac hoses. There's tons of websites showing how to install one. Like this:

recirc is a maf thing it wont help with spool. i dont understand your logic there lol.
EBC's are easy as pie. they run a solonoid and a map style sensor on it so it can monitor the boost. its honestly just running wires and a couple power and ground hook ups. greddy profec is a good boost controller. but the older version. HKS is a great company to though.

Recirc takes the blown off air, and puts it back in right before the turbo. Forcing air in right before the turbo aids in keeping the wheel spinning.

theres an open air filter at the other end to, its going to ventout that way past the MAF. if it "aids" in keeping it spooled, its so nominal you could never measure teh difference. its all about "fluid" pressures. they flow the easiest way out.

I tried it both ways and I could tell the difference watching the boost gauge.

recirc I could close and open the throttle quickly and boost would be instantly back to 7psi.

The vented one would loose 1psi each time but I got the ricey BOV noise so its totally worth it!

i bought a greddy profec b spec 2 electronic boost controller on ebay. i installed it today and it is sweet. i run such consistent boost and no spiking or drop off. so happy with it. it spools much faster and it is just sweet. so yea i would recommend to anyone to never buy or install a manual boost controller on because they never work right and they r just a waste of money, just don't be cheap and buy and electronic one.

The manual boost controllers are fine as long as you get a good quality one. I tried a cheapo $29 one on the wifes Talon, and couldn't get it to dial down below 20psi, put on a Hallman Pro mbc and it works great, running around 16psi now. For the record I got both for free, otherwise I would have most likely went looking for an Ebay deal on an electronic one.

I put a manual boost controler on my 350Z and it keeps the boost at zero all the time. works perfect!

I put a manual boost controler on my 87 300zx and I get 12-13psi all the time... not 9 one time and 13 the next time... the only thing is I can't get over 15psi... I guess that is a good thing, since I don't have an inercooler...

You probably don't want to bother with anything more than 12psi on a stock turbo. And 12 psi is a lot for no intercooler.

Alright I figured I might throw it in this thread. I think it's time to upgrade to a BOV. I'm thinking I should probably go recirculating since I'm running the MAF and I remember lifegrddude saying that unless you did the manual shifting the auto had a tendency to stall with a regular blowoff, since it shifts so low.

Anyway what do you guys recommend, and also what's the best way to hook it up to recirculate? Could I for instance run that line that comes off the turbo boot that goes to the VCM to the blow-off or would that be too small a line? Although if I could go for a regular that'd be fine too since you get the RICE!, but recirc sounds a bit better.

When did Lifegrddude say that? When an auto shifts, it doesn't shut the throttle body (unless you let off to shift), so there is no huge build up of pressure for the bov to release... so the bov doesn't open.
