AC conversion in my 79 yesterday
Bought an EZ Cool kit to try and get the AC to work again yesterday. The kit has the new adaptors to fit the modern AC charging hoses and 3 cans of R134A with the gauge and filler hose. The system still had a little R12 but low enough pressure that the system didn't run. I removed it and did the conversion. Took about a half hour to finish this simple project and I now have cold AC coming out of the vents at 34 degrees. Taking it down to my friends auto repair business today to have him check to see if I've filled the system with the right amount. The kits are under $45.00 at Pep Boys here and the 3, 18 ounce cans are more than enough for our cars. Hard to believe that a 35 year old car could still have a good AC unit that has never been repaired. The clock in mine still works and keeps perfect time.

Did you use a vacuum / manifold set to evacuate the system? I've noticed that refilling an open / empty system takes a long time to refill. I've had to work on enough a/c systems lately that I think it's time to buy a vacuum & manifold... then when the system has a vacuum, just open the can and it sucks it right in.

When I pushed in one of the fittings there was so little freon left in the system that it just pushed out a low pressure hiss for maybe 3 seconds. It did take a while shaking and turning the cans to try and empty them. It's been almost a week now and the AC is still ice cold. I did take it to my friends auto repair business the day after I filled it to see if the charge was enough and he checked it with his gauges and said it was fine. Only one thing to go on my repair list now. That is to get the cruise control to work . It lights on when you flip the switch but the stalk button does nothing. Other than this it's 100%.
