My 83 280zx will not crank over all you hear when you turn the key is a clicking sound, could this noise be from the silonoid? Also have a 82 280zx took the starter off it and tried it on my 83 and nothing, checked my battery its good swapped batteries they are both good, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey brenda, welcome to ZDriver!
Pick up a factory service manual for free at XenonS130 - S130 Reference Your FSM will have a pile of inspection and troubleshooting pages you can follow pretty easily.
Not sure what you mean by a 'good' battery. Places that sell batteries will test your battery and alternator for free - but you'll have to drive them there. From what you describe, I first suspect that the starter is good and you aren't getting the amps you need from the battery. But you switched batteries so that's probably not it. If the starter is bad, the second starter should have worked OK.
Then there's the connections issue where your battery cables/terminals aren't doing what they should. Check for corrosion and bad connections. Remove terminals, clean them or replace them with terminals which don't vibrate loose. Check cable connection at the ground point. Report back with what you have found so we get the feedback and can try other approaches.

OK, cool. Why not post some pics for us? They could inspire our 280Z guys here to get involved. (They are real shy
It's genetic, I think. Maybe.)
To post photos, sign in, click Post Reply, write your reply, click on the little paper clip to the right of the smiley face just above the text box, locate (browse) your photos, click on them, they list, click Upload, click Close This Window, click Submit. Easy enough?
If your Z won't run at all now, there is a problem other than your battery/starter. Let us know what happens - and def check the service manual. It can point you to stuff you never thought about. We can also give you some input here.

This page just does not get the frequent visits from most of us, and the structure allows an unanswered question to languish, if you need a more timely response, our facebook page is pretty well monitored. I personally appreciate ZXGuy1986, he has been going a great job of fielding most questions and welcoming new people to the site... Cheers everyone, and a Happy holiday Season to Everyone !
Sorry it has taken me awhile to get back and report on the problem. It turned out to be something sooooooo very simple the wirs on the started and coil were not making good contact,so now my purple 280zx is back on the road again, but a little hurt as to my husband blew my doors off lol he was in the 280zx turbo.. but both are running great and wouldnt give them up for anything.I think the older generation of cars are a whole lot easier and less complicated to work on and my 2 cars are so very good on gas, even though they break us if we fill them up at the same time.thanks for the help take care everyone.
