83 280zx need help ASAP!

I'm 19 and in tech school for collision repair. I bought this car from a man who had no knowledge of it's condition. The interior is crap but it ran good for a little while. It started ticking a little bit the other day so a buddy of mine took the head cover off but immediately put it back on because he didnt know anything about these engines. After we put the plug wires back on it was missing so we checked to make sure we had the right firing order. Now ive bought new plug wires but the car still misses and runs rough. She's my only way to school twenty mins away so any quick help would be awesome

Welcome to ZDriver!

I'm assuming you have a Haynes manual or downloaded the FSM if you checked the firing order? If not, download the FSM right now from XenonS130 - S130 Reference

Always start with the basics:
-Read the spark plugs.
-Check timing.
-Check all sensors and connections.
-Use a flat head screwdriver to check that all injectors are firing (put screwdriver up to injector body, put handle to your ear). You should hear them ticking.

Ok so i ran some injector cleaner through it and put new NGK platinum spark plugs in it and its still missing pretty bad, although it picked up a little of the power that it lost. Im going to check my timing this weekend when i have a little time but i work almost everyday on top of school, and i dont have a shop and only a limited number of tools that i have aquired from school.

Ok curious, would your Z have the hose that runs from the rubber coupler just past the AFM to the breather tube on top of the valve cover? I know a misreading AFM because of a decent vacuum leak after it can cause those same symptoms if that hose was disconnected or split or cracked, or.if its there and your oil cap doesn't seal right.

update

The miss was an injector bad. I have since then drained and changed all fluids and she feels a bit better. I had the exhaust leak welded today so she sounds better too. I've got some new rubber on the back wheels because one of the cheap *** ones that was on there blew out but didn't cause damage. Next projects to do on this thing is left front wheel bearing all around brakes and a speaking in the back when I let off the gas...? Also its an automatic car but she won't shift into her last gear. Any comments feel free to post. I'll take all the help I can get

so you have been rolling around going like 4 grand everywhere in second gear?
why are you doing the wheel bearing? is there a noise?
and do you mean squeaking in the back when you let off the gas?

Actually bout three grand but yea it sounds like the trans tries to shift but the rpms only drop like 300. The bearing is about out in it and I need this car everyday so I'm jus goin to repair it before it becomes a major problem. And yes when I'm driving and take my foot off the accelerater I hear a squeaking in the rear of the car. The noise stops when I'm accelerating.

Make sure your emergency brake cable is not sticking, you could be hearing the brakes rubbing at slow speeds because the cable is not retracting.
