Damn Alternator

After taking the Z for a much needed bath I find out the seals between the door glass and T-tops on both sides leak. And the seal on the top of the windshield.

When I got home I pulled the car into the garage and it died a couple min later. I jumped it and pulled the pos off the battery and boom another bad alternator... Good thing summit racing will take it back.

So I was having an acceleration issue. The motor would idle fine at about 7-800 rpm but sounded a little weak then when raising the rpm to above 2,000 it would bog down then go. It did this both sitting and driving.

I checked the timing and it was +10, I returned it to 0 and it got worse so I tried to return it to +10 and slipped it to +22 and wow it smoothed out at idle and the acceleration was much smoother and more responsive without the bogging.

How bad would it be if I leave it at +22?

As long as it's not detonating / pinging, you're fine. Just remember to turn it back down come smog check time. Shady280 runs his n/a at about 15*. The L28ET stock timing is 24*.

Fantastic!

Now I have to open the rocker cover, there's a metal on metal "ticking" sound coming from there. FML

Exhaust 1/2 White 1/2 Black

Just pulled the exhaust manifold and this is what I see. What is causing this?

It looks fine to me, what do you think is wrong?

oh yea and that metal ticking you're hearing is most likely one of two things, your fuel injectors ticking away, or you need to adjust your valve lash, the FSM has a great section on how to adjust it, and you don't need that special wrench they tell you to use, it can be easily done with two normal wrenches.

I thought it would be black in all 6 not white in 3 and black in the other 3.

It is only noticeable after the motor is off, and I've unplugged each injector and it continues.

oh, the white is probably from burning oil, I came to that conclusion by looking at a plug plug diagnosis chart.
it ticks after the engine is off? and your sure its not just the exhaust ticking like it does in every car?

I'll have to check the plugs and see why it's burning oil.

It has been a while since I have been on here. Thanks to EvanDubYa I now have a full exhaust with a magnaflow muffler. Next pain is getting the intake manifold bolted back in. Then some time this spring/summer the suspension should be upgraded to polyurethane.

It does sound great! RPD and Highway Patrol don't seem to like it.

Next project is the suspension then the weather stripping.

Weeeelllllll.... crap. Killed another alternator. WTF is going on here? This is #3 of the GM 1 wire alternators. Could the belt be too tight?

Sadly this happens the same day I find out I got a new job 30 miles away.

Have you checked the timing cover water outlet for drips/pressure spray?

What make/model alternator you using? Getting the crappy autozone remans?

There are no signs of leaks anywhere.

The alternator is a GM one-wire from Summit Racing.

Do you have a huge subwoofer sound system, or any other big electrical upgrades?

For 10 years I've been running a 72amp GM 1-wire with a 0 gauge wire straight to the battery... granted, the car has been garaged 90% of that time.

Everything is stock on this Z. I found the culprit after loosening the alternators adjustable bolt.... The bottom bolt snapped clean off...

Been driving to and from work for a while now. No major issues thus far. I am going to take the Z to EvanDubYa's in September to get the suspension done. All bushings are getting replaced. We are thinking about doing solid aluminum for the rear sub-frame.

Anyone had any knocking to the rear of the rocker cover after an oil change?
