1983 Non-Turbo Hum

when the vehicle is started, there is a hum (maybe it doesn't know the words, but it's getting louder)...i'm fairly certain that its the fuel pump. i had it replaced a few months ago. It does not affect the performance, but it is pretty loud...do i have anything to worry about, and is there a way to quiet it? Thanks!

The general location of the sound would help...

If it's the fuel pump, it's normal. Once the tank is almost empty, it will get louder & quieter as more / less fuel is leaving the tank into the fuel pump line.

It seems to be coming from the mid-back of the hatch area. It does seem to quiet some with a full tank. Wow, thanks. As usual, you are spot on!

Not really car runs it was connected proper. . . . . Was the replacement new or bone yard? New well not alot to do keep it close to home for a month or two if you did buy a defective part. . . . . Other than that how was the rubber mount? Did the bolts back out of the clamp? If the car starts "running out of gas" get it home and throw the dice again. Bought a napa rebuilt starter for my 79 sounded like a blender full of nuts and bolts so they gave me a replacement. Keep that in mind. . . . Its not a 93 civic so parts are made in much smaller runs example would be a 95 civic starter say they have a failure 1 in 500 parts out of a few thousand made compared to my datsun they make only limited numbers so the chances you got a shitty part are much higher so keep your slips handy.

it was a new one. Aftermarket of course because the OEM was prohibitibly expensive, but it seems to have gotten louder over the last month or so...

^^^ Good point... no bushing / insulator on the fuel pump would cause a loud hum.
