Exclamation 1983 280ZX Bogging at 4500 RPM

The title says it all, unfortunately.

A few weeks ago, my daily driver 280ZXT decided to just **** out on me completely. I'm on my way home from buying Chinese food when all of the sudden my power drops out from underneath me and I'm left legging my way home at around 25mph.

It started as what felt like backfiring, and eventually grew to the point where I can't bring the car above 4000-4500 rpm, or around 25-35mph.

Here's a quick video of the issue:

Here's a list of what I've replaced:

CHTS
Spark plugs
Distributor cap
Rotor
Ignition Coil
Spark plug cables
Fuel filter

Any ideas?

Welcome to ZDriver!

Have you checked the timing? Checked all the sensor and ecu connections for corrosion? Checked for vacuum leaks?

Try to unplug and plug the ecu connectors several times or just clean them!!!
Same issue happened to me and that was the first thing I did ..... ran fine after that!

Borini63 - what is the best procedure for cleaning connectors? I have encountered this problem in my '82 280ZXT several times over the past 33 years.

Any electrical cleaner will do just clean the two ECU harness plugs, plug and unplug the connectors several time.
Also you need to make sure all the connectors are clean and the ground wires....
I hope in your case just cleaning!!!

Did you check the voltage coming off your positive cable. I had corrosion going on inside the insulation. Still shown 12 v on my gauge however it was popping, backfire and would not rev past 2500 rpm. Weirdly a drunken pal checked the cable and shown it was getting 12 to acc position but 9 everywhere else.

Used some CRC contact cleaner on connectors and it runs great now. Thanks for the advice.
