Both sides? The Spider gear is inside the differential.

Do you mean your U-joints are bad?

thnks for asking or asking to try to answer. its the back axles and the U-Joints or the part that moves in the axle. Driving a 1981 but replaced them with a 82 axle from parts car but still want to replace u joints and put the originals back if possible. The 82's seemed a little shorter than the original. The differential in the 81 and 82 might be different. The 81 could have an R180 and the 82 would definatly be an R200. If so, I'm surprised you were able to put the half-shafts in.

Well, if you can find an 82-83 280ZX 2+2 turbo or non-turbo they have CV halfshafts. You won't get any clunking from them. Also, if you hear a clunk in the rear and think that it is loose U-joints, it could also be old differential mount bushings. Those are usually the first thing to go.
