Help Nowwwww Please!!!

WTF??? my left brake light will NOT turn off... it's been on for an hour and a half (smoke has started coming from the light), and i can't get it to turn off.. I ended up just unplugging the battery, and there is no reason for this? any help??

probably just a short, and the smoke was from the smoldering wire that, if left unfixed, might cause an electrical fire or at least burn up and possibly cause other wires to melt and short out.

Would this have anything to do with the "plugs" on the pedal?? Just a thought...

okay, ive been outside all night, I've been on the phone with a friend and he says it's probably to do with the brake pedal position switch apparently a quick fix... IF I KNEW where it was located? anyone with a manual to look it up? Also found it's not just one brake light, it's both... I just had one bulb burned out already

thanks

Hey, a lot of times it's the little button on the back side of the brake pedal that either pops off or wears out. A penny and a little electrical tape is all you need... been working for me for about two years now

If you crawl up in there, you should see where the brake pedal hits the switch.

Rod.

That still doesn’t really explain the smoke coming from the light housing. Id try the break position switch, and still do a thorough check on the housings in the rear, a short there could still cause a fire, and that wouldn’t be good.

Hey Jabo. I have sort of the same problem with my '81. If I found out the problem, I would tell you. Because when my battery is hooked up. The running lights stay on. I ended up for now unplugging the fuses for all the lights. Until I find out the problem. But it does sound like you have a short somewhere. Just trace the wires from the light until you locate, either 2 wires touching, or across each other. Hope this helps! Later

i think the smoking was coming from the light being on for so long and it was making the plastic hot... still no fix. Can anyone

are we talking behind the pedal itself or on up towards the bracket?

Up towards the bracket!
Maybe it was just a light amount of steam coming from your tail light or your hot breath in the cold air?

Cool deal glad it worked out! Hopefully sometime, I will figure out my problem. But no hurry, my '82 is the next one to get restored. Later!

I'm thinking that would have to do with the combo switch on the steering column, under the cover behind the wheel. Just a thought, though...

Hey Carl; Yeah I thought it could be the switch, because I had to take it apart, and rig it to work before. Basically I didn't have the funds for a new switch. But my '82 had extra parts with it. And I think it has the same steering column headlight washer cruise control switch. I will check sometime. But no hurry because I am more worried about the front end getting fixed. And that project is on the back burner. My '82 is priority right now. But thanks for the thought! Later
