Water 'Warning' light

Hello everyone.

I just recently purchased a 1983 280zx (with digital dash). I am new to this forum, a friend of mine who has owned a 280zx for quite some time referred me to you guys to keep in normal contact with! Which I will most certainly do!

Anyway, I presed the little warning light on my 280zx to see if there were any warning that would show up and it said 'WATER' so I refilled the coolant in the car and the coolant has maintained the same amount for a while now, but the warning light keeps triggering. The coolant is obviously circulating in the engine because the cap has pressure when released.

What could it be? does the radiator need to be cleaned? maybe buildup?

When the car runs, the temperature gauge reads about 1/2, maybe slightly above but just shy of 3/4 when running normally. Is this high for this car?

Anyway, just some advice would be nice in regards to it.

Thanks folks! I love the 280, I want to be a contributing part of these forums.

Welcome to ZDriver!

The coolant level sensor is in the overflow tank...

Make sure you download the FSM for free at www.xenons130.com/reference

So fill the overflow up to the mark on the outside, light will go out, Mine did the same thing to me, if the overflow tank is dry or low, you will get the warning light !

The one that both my main car and my parts car always show is the stupid wiper fluid level. No matter how much fluid is in there, it is never enough to get me the magic green OK.

Have you pulled the float stick to see if it moves up & down freely? You could always disconnect it... then no red box (it trips when the float grounds out at the bottom... not connected... no trip).

They typically read around the middle. I had one that was reading higher but it turned out the gauge had some problems. Swaped it out with another one and it was good to go.

I have pulled the float stick, and it moves up and down just fine. I think the problem is that there is a crack in the stick which lets in water. I might just have to leave it disconnected, though. I love the green OK.

Unfortunately, my parts car has the same issue! Maybe it is time to make a trip to the junk yard.
