Tricky Ignition Problem
Tricky Ignition Problem
Hey all,
I'm currently getting very weak spark to my plugs. The car idles at about 100rpms and won't go any higher when given more gas. It is 100% a problem with the spark to the plugs. The coil is putting out a strong spark.
The original problem was a bad connection to the ignition module. I replaced the module and wires (from the coil) and I must have slipped up somewhere and caused this new problem.
I know that before replacing the ign. module I was getting full spark to the plugs. I swapped the old module back in (it works - it just had bad connections) and I still have the same weak spark. When I replaced the module I tried to clean the points inside the distr. cap. I thought that I may have scratched a small amount of metal off of the points and caused a larger gap between the rotor and points. This is why I tried changing the rotor/cap.
I've replaced:
- Ignition Module
- Ignition Coil
- Distributor Cap
- Distributor Rotor
- Plug Wires
I've swapped all the old parts back in one by one and still have the same weak spark. Could this be caused by partially damaged wires inside the distributor? (the ones going to the ign module) The only 2 things I can figure may be bad are those wires or AutoZone sold me a bad rotor/cap with too much gap between the rotor tip and the points on the cap.
Are these common symptoms to suggest a bad rotor/cap? I'm running out of options here and would really like to avoid changing the distributor since I know it was working fine before I replaced the ign. module.
Thanks for any help!

Check your timing first off, and double check your wires, you can cross them or get them on totally backwards (thinking the #6 Cylinder is actually #1). Might also check the ECU, swap it out or something. Make sure you dont also have the coil hooked up wrong and that everything else is grounded right.
