timing issue

So I am trying to set the timing since I was tooth off...the engine backfires sometimes mostly while granny driving. I set the idle at 700rpm and the timing to 12 degrees. I heard if you got the head resurfaced you have to compensate for it. Any advice?

Did you fix it so it's now lined up correctly?

If you shaved it over .080" then you need to use shims.

If the timing is truly set to 12* BTDC and it has no power, start with reading the spark plugs.

Is this a turbo or n/a?
If it's n/a, initial timing is 8* BTDC, with vacuum advance disconnected.
If it's a turbo, initial timing is 24* BTDC with TPS disconnected.
How are you "setting the idle" ?

It is NA. I raise the rpm to 2000 for 2 min. and adjust.

Where can I find a "How to" for setting timing? Ive been through the haynes and a rebuild book for the L28 and still nothing. Ive also been through the zdriver and zcar forums and find nothing. Any pointing in the right direction is greaty appreciated.

Distributor timing: Haynes manual pgs 26-27, 44-45

Timing chain (crank to cam) timing: Haynes manual page 77.

I've also posted Haynes / FSM scans on both of these many times.

Im reading it again. Are there any videos on it? I seem to learn better by seeing what I am supposed to do.

Which "timing" are you asking about? Distributor or timing chain? (this thread is about lining up the timing chain correctly)
