i think it might be your pcv valve, reason being is b/c it gives your rings a tight seal as i was told. if it is clogged, the crankcase oil might be passing through your rings. (just a thought)

I see those modules on Z-car classifieds now and then, or on eBay. Don't pay $300 for a new one. Get one used.

Skully, I went through this before on my 81 ZX. You said your Ignition module had a small chip inside with jelly over it right? If the little chip was about 3/4 to 1" square it was an aftermarket (cheap ****) Module. Mine had the same one and lasted about three months. These are sold at any auto parts store and in my oppinion is not worth the money. When I took it to my Z mechanic he told me this and then showed me the inside of a original 81 Module, that little box is full of wires and a circuit board, Hardley what I had. Another thing is that the ignition Module on an 81 is only for that year! 82-83 model years had a little differnt one. Finding a ignition module for an 81 is a little harder I paid $100.00USD for mine but could have got 82-83 for $50.00USD all day long. The differnce is that the 81 has only 2 plugs where as the 82-83 have 3 plugs, However I did find out "After I bought mine" that the 82-83 modules will work on an 81, but an 81 will not work on an 82-83. On the 82-83 modules you will have a little plug with two wires that you will not use, If I rember correctly the 81 has a mechanical advance where as the 82-83 has an electrical advance that is what the other plug goes back to the computer to advance the timing. Hope this helps and I would strongly recomend not buying an aftermarket module espically for 300.00.

From what I've been told no it will not change anything. That plug I know goes to the later computer(what it does exactly I can't rember). But my mechanic / Z specialist told me this he has done this in the past with no problems.

If that doesn't work, keep the old distributor and put it on a different 280ZX. Maybe that'll fix the problem! LOL
