Sometins up

so i go to visit my friend to next town its a 2 hour drive...
on the way there no problems...
on the way back ugh...half way trough.....
im driving in 5th round 3000 rpm and i feel the car hesitating...so i pull over to the next gas station and the car just boggs down n dies...i tried to start it it ran like at 200 rpm and BLACK smoke out the back and if i try to revv it just shakes and runs like crap! So i was like CRAP! So i played around with connections and spark plugs and cables and the AFM and after 2 hours of screwing around (didnt change any settings at all, just unpluged and pluged connections)...i try to start it and it started bit rough but then work itself in and ran perfect 800-900 rpm....so what the hell is up with that huh? one of "its" quirks!! where you call your brother and tell him your cars fuxed and hour later when he comes the cars damn fine...

Sounds like you knocked some carbon loose and the motor was choking on it for awhile. Mine does wierd things after I drive it a good distance too. I'ts not really used to anything more than my daily 8 mile commute.

For "fun" I once unplugged my head temp sensor to see what that does. Runs super rich and chokes and coughs. Can't hold an idle long. Maybe it was just a bad connection.

I poke holes in the intake manifold gasket to see if it increases performance!

Actually, at the time I unplugged the head temp sensor I was trying to fix a rich mixture problem. I ended up replacing the head temp sensor ($50) but that wasn't the problem. It was the fuel pressure regulator. The one time I took my Z to a mechanic was that time. Cost me about $300 for that diagnostic.

Well, another long shot is that maybe your alternator or battery (connections) are bad. If you have weak spark I suppose it could run really rough and look rich because the fuel isn't burning well. Clean the battery connections. Take the battery out of the car and charge it. You do have a volt-meter so you should be able to see if you have an alternator charge.

That is a good possibility, I was messing with my 78 this weekend and it would crank up fine and idle but after a little while it started running ruff I noticed my voltage light flickering and pulled another vehical over next to it. Hooked up the jumper cables and it instantly started running better. Thats pretty odd, put my meter on it and it read 9V, it should read 14V running.

So you're thinking you aren't getting spark anymore. When a coil goes out, it just suddenly dies and that's it. It won't stop and start or cause a bad idle. Its the ignition module on the distributor that "can" go out and come back to life for a while.

well its gettin spark...its gettin gas...it can turn over but wont start. last time it ran it ran around 200 rpm black smoke outback rough as hell....it suddenly did that after i went over some RR tracks...now i cant get it to start

is it maybe my timing....and why when i take the cap off the distributor and take the rotor off the little teeth (looks like a gear) dont line up with the posts on the side...im sure you know what im talkin about is it suppose to?

maybe i should check the gas agan...my guage isnt workin all that well..

I had this problem on an '85 Ford Escort today and - lucky for you - I know exactly the problem ... If your coil isn't putting out a spark, it's that ignition module. I took it to AutoZone, and they tested it on a special machine for FREE. They can tell you if it's bad. If it's not the iggy module, bring them the coil, they'll test it as well. Hope this helps guys ...
