Short shifter for Turbo T5

On my last T5 I bought a factory 1993 GT shifter assembly. I had it cut and welded shorter. That worked great.

I'm thinking of buying this cheap short shifter kit on eBay. ya, eBay performance parts... at least its not a turbo

Anyone know of these types of no-name shifters being used? Maybe I'll be the first to report on it.

Short shifter kit on eBay

It will fit... but who knows if the pivot point has actually been changed to give a "shorter throw".

Looks like the same general design is being marketed all over ebay, for all kinds of prices:

The factory Ford shifter assembly I bought didn't seem to be that tall of a unit. It would seem the pivot point actually is taller on these short shifters.

just using online pics, it would seem the shift point is taller from the factory Nissan T5 shifter

I think I had to spend about $30 on the used Ford stuff anway so $50 isn't much more for something new rather than used.

The only thing I would be wary on the ebay shifters is that I don't see any adjustable stops for the gates. It would be bad to shift too far and damage the synchros or gears. Just a heads up!

That is the biggest risk on a T5. They are notoriously susceptible to "over" shifting the gears. The last thing you want to do is a rebuild on your T5.

Go here and call Pro 50 Shifters to ask for the part number for the one for our cars:

Then order it from Jegs for $50 off:

I'm trying to find a way to custom adapt a Borg Warner T5 transmission to work in a 280ZX turbo. Got any ideas?

i've never seen either transmission up close, so no. but good luck. is the stock tranny that bad that it needs to be upgraded?

Bleach is being an azz. Every '82 & '83 280ZX Turbo with manual transmission came with a Borg/Warner T5.

It's trivial to swap a stock Mustang T5 shifter or one of the available aftermarket short shifters into a 280ZX Turbo with a T5.

ya Snwy, next i'll just put an SX 5-speed in it and an SR20DET. That's the answer to everything, next to dropping a Chevy 350 in it.

So I bought the cheapo shifter.
It has adjustable shifting stops as well as the bottom plate that has a square opening in it allowing the shifter to only go so far.
I also bought a 2008 Mustang GT shifter **** to go with it. Its leather and silver. I like it.

The shifter itself has three holes so you can install this funky backwards angle piece like the Mustang requires. I'm going to cut the top mounting hole off so I can mount the shifter **** another 1/2 inch lower.

it does appear that the pivot point is a little higher up.
Overall, before cutting anything, even the shifter handle itself is lower. I'll drive it first before I cut anything

It drives really nice. The shifting is a lot shorter than stock. I don't think I will cut it down any more.

Thanks for the updates and pics. I might try it out as well. I'm not a big fan of this stock Cobra shifter I have in my Z. It sits way too high, the shift **** is probably level with the lower half of the fan controls. How does the shifter look mounted in your Z?
