Sounds like it might be your alternator belt. Have you checks all of the belts for cracks or deterioration?

Usually when the fan clutch is bad, it will cause the fan to not work properly, resulting in the coolant getting too hot. Are you having any problems with overheating . . . temp. gauge rising even slightly above normal?

It really sounds to me that the belt might just need to be dressed and/or adjusted. How long have you had the car? Does the belt appear to be fairly new? Is it an aftermarket belt or OEM?

One way to tell whether the fan clutch is going bad is to run the engine for a while (at least 15 mins., to let it warm up), then turn on the A/C while the car is just idling (sitting still). If the temp. gauge rises above normal (over halfway), then the problem might be the fan clutch.

fans

Just because the temp dont rise dont mean the fan is good. I have seen many stay engaged all the time. So when they do temp will not rise because fan stays engaged. Mine did on my 83, drove me nuts cause all you heard was fan noise.............
