I don't think the computers made any difference at all. The addition of an oxygen sensor did change the computer but not the horsepower. The main difference in a simple swap was about 10hp and +10 lbs of torque. The 1975-80 blocks have the dished pistons and the 1981-83 blocks/head combos have flat top pistons with only slightly higher compression. You could shave your head to get the higher compression though. Put in a new timing chain and advance it to the #2 position to take up the slack.

In the USA, it is in fact the opposite of what you stated. The 280Z and 280ZX from 1975-1980 used the same block with dished pistons. The 1981-83 changed to the F54 block (design used for the turbo engine too) and the n/a got flat tops with 8.8:1 compression. The turbo F54 block used turbo dished pistons, also from 1981 on as we all know that was the first year of the turbo.

The net vs. gross horsepower rating on the 280Z of 170hp and 280ZX of 135 or 145hp is not the proving factor.

The earlier blocks produced 135 wheel horsepower or 170 crank horsepower while the later produced about 145 wheel horsepower or 182 crank horsepower.

If you really want a better system, go custom. Build a megasquirt fuel injection computer. Not only will that give you a tunable system, but that frees up the intake by using a vaccume sensor and no air flow meter!
