location of fuel pump relay? and now fuel pump wiring...

can anyone help me out with this? i orderd the haynes manuel last week but it hasnt come in yet... i put a new fuel pump on but it doesnt run on the car's power... however if a hook up a separate power source directly to the fuel pump, it pumps the fuel up to the front of the car just fine.

so somethings not working somewhere and i wanted to start with the fuel pump relay but i cant find it. any extra help would be greatly appreciated. thanks guys.

in a 280ZX, remove the glovebox. A little further back on the right side behind where the glove box was you'll find a couple relays right next to each other. I believe it is the furthest one back that is the fuel pump relay.

I believe the fuel pump relay is the green one. There's only one green relay too.

ok here is a different question, similar subject as i am hesitant to make a new thread....

not only was the stock fuel pump missing off the car, but the wiring attached to the fuel pump was to.. when i installed the new pump i made my own wires and plugged them into the harness inside the hatch (where the wires run through the hole from underneath the car). the fuel pump doesnt run on the cars power, which i have now found that it is because the pump is not getting ground. when i wire a ground to it, it works fine.

so my question is, do those "factory" wires connected to the pump have a special connection that aloows for the ground? my two theories are: is that its losing the ground either somewhere between or including the relay and the pump; there is a separate ground connection that i lost with the fuel pump wires.

any help is greatly appreciated. thanks again!

So ground it...

Do you have a Haynes manual? Because all the wiring schematics can be found in the back. The fuel pump shares a common body ground... so just ground the fuel pump & go.

82-83 is the same (no need to add 83 if 82 is the same). Look on page 250.

so what you're saying nismo pick is that instead of pluging in the ground wire into the little harness i should just wire it sraight to a ground? (when i did that it worked fine), but shouldnt it recieve the ground from the common ground through the little harness? thats why im not sure if im losing a ground somewhere. if a am losing a ground somewhere that could mean something else could potentially not be functioning as well right?

its hard for me to tell since i havent got the car running yet... i might have to pull the injectors as they also might be gummed up as well, but i wanted to make sure i had fuel first. i will be surprised if the car starts right up and has no other problems.

sopposedly when the car was last running (4 years ago), "it had no power and wouldnt accelerate"

im sorry, i'm going off of the "new posts" tab.

while we're on the subject; nismopick do you check "new posts" or the "280zx Performance/Technichal". reason i ask is because you are the one who mostly answers my questions and i dont want to upset some of the elder members such as entropy31 on this forum by "bumping"

I usually check out "todays posts" before logging in... that way I don't just see posts since my last login, but I also check the 280zx sections. Weekends can be slow here as people are out doing other stuff... if you post a question, please wait more than a couple hours to start bumping. I only bump on old threads that need an update.

So to your prob... ground the fuel pump & work out other probs as they come up. No need to spend all your time worrying about a simple ground right now.

New Posts is updated per individual user. if someone has not read the new posts in the thread, it will show up for them, even if it does not show up for you. hence, bumping is unneccesary.

well i went ahead and grounded it, that parts eems to be ok. the engine starts and runs like crap and dies after a few seconds. you cant give it gas and the idle is insanely rough, it just sputters out and dies. any ideas? i guess im going to start with inspecting the injectors. there are chopped wires inside aound where what i think is the kncok sensoR AND POSSIBLY THE CHTS. so it looks like im going to have some wiring problems....

Does the fuel pump relay also control the fuel injectors to work or not on a 1977 280z?

im not sure about the older 280's, but as far as i know... all the fuel pump relay does is complete the circuit to the fuel pump... but obviously the injectors wont get fuel if the switch in the relay isnt tripped, i know that on my turbo model, the ecu plays a big part with the injectors... dont know if that helps
