Installed Crane Ign Today
Wednesday night I ordered an XR3000 ign unit from Crane and it arived today, Friday. Thanks, Crane.
The installation was a cakewalk, my only complaints are that the bracket for the LED & sensor was a poor fit and I had to grind the edge a bit.
The only other thing that gave me concern is that the LED/sensor unit is plastic and mounts to its bracket with a machine screw threaded into a hole in the plastic. I have visions of the threads in the plastic going south leaving the LED/sensor flying in the breeze.
Performance wise, this thing is great. Before, I couldn't start car when it was hot, it idled poorly, and I couldn't get 10*BTDC. Now, engine starts easily hot or cold, it idles smoothly, (I even had to lower the idle as the new ign. kicked the idle to over 1K rpm.) I had no trouble setting 10* BTDC, could've given her more but I'm running cheap 87 fuel.
Performance is outstanding. The car accelerates flawlessly w/o the slightest hesitation. I've seen the dyno results showing no HP gained with high performance ign, but the dyno in the seat of my pants said otherwise. Probably my old ign was weak and did not allow the engine to reach its potential.
Bottom line - runs great and no more starting problems. Highly recommended.

Congrats on the smog, I passed on the second attempt - the first guy wanted to charge me an extra $85 to set my timing - took about 5 minutes at home.
Anyway the car runs great now with the Crane unit. I also rebuilt the dist because the plastic bearing carrier fell apart and jammed the advance plate.
Ultimately, I want to do a 351 FSB swap, but can't get much info for the ZX swap, not even from hybridz.com, so I might first try it on my V6 Fox-Bird.
