Hell when i was growing up in Fremont Gemco and the Treasury was the place to get the cheap clothes. The New Park mall was just a field i use to BMX at. My mom had to raise 5 of us so we didnt get ****. I bought my first car at 15. it was a 1970 Ford Ranchero. I had it for a summer in San diego then left it with my dad. I had paper routes from the age of 8 until 19. I also worked in walnut creak at the Movie theatre while I was going to school. I would get out of school at 4pmand drive to walnut creek from Fremont. Before that I work at great America and the 76 station on Grimmer and Dakoto. The Vettes use to come in there to go drag at Baylands.

I got my first 240 from my brother cause he blew up my Chevette. I had that car for about 8 months. I got drunk one night and traded it for a Honda Interceptor. I had that bike for about 3 months. I picked up a 77 280Z in Vegas in 1985.

Since then I have owned 57 Vehicles. I have owned my current 78 280Z since 1999. I picked it up for 1000, from a kid in Idaho Falls.

Me and my wife are both self employed. It is nice when we are both working. When my contracts end it kinda sucks. I did not go to college cause it was way to boring. I showed up for tests on Friday and still had A,s. I just could not see wasting all that money to not be taught anything. I have my MCSE certifacations and 15 years experience in the computer field. i do mostly adminitrative work now. i do both resource coordinator and Project Manager. I earned these jobs the old fashion way. I worked my *** off and proved myself.

I interview people all the dam time. I am so tired of talking to people with 6 years of college but no OJT. I had 1 guy who had MCSE, CNE and a crap load more. But he had only worked on 6 computers outside of the lab. Now I would rather have someone in the field who can fix a problem then someone who has a crap load of toilet paper.

Dont get me wrong college is great for some people. But think about this.... would you want someone fresh out of mechanic school working on your Z. Or someone who has been a mechanic on Z,s for the past 15 years with basic certifacations.

Reading this thread brings back memories.......

For the past two years I've been involved with a Nissan club (not just Z's) and there are a lot of younger kids who have Spec V's, Altimas and such that are a little too ricey for my taste. When I pull up most of 'em don't even know what the car is. When I tell 'em, they look and say, "Wow, that's an old car." Old?!? I remember when these were the newest thing on the market!!! Guess I'm just showing my age...

Good to see that some of the younger guys have an intrest in these things we call Z's.

Ya, a 280ZX is OLD? No, a 240Z is old.
Well, I'm 26 but I've been on these Z forums since about age 20 I think. Seems like only yesturday I was asking how to turbo a non-turbo engine for not much money. My 280ZX wasn't very old when I first bought it 8 years ago. I've probably never had any material possesion in my life for 8 years besides this Z.

I've got 5.5 years in Information Systems (not management) but no degree. I was going for a website design degree, then dropped out because it was not what I really wanted. Also, I had started the IS job back then and liked it. :badpc:

Of all people to hear that from ... And to think, you're the number one guy to hit up for answers on the same subject. Says a lot about your knowledge and how you gained it.

Aren't old-school cars great? Gotta love the E-type as well - a neighbor of mine has a baby blue E-type convertible (XKE ?) ... sexiest car alive, aside from my Z

Actually, I dont' understand that comment. Since the whole "turbo a non-turbo" comment was a joke what are you really saying about me? That's the classic newbie question. Or more simply put "How can I get a lot of power from my car? I don't know anything about engines and I dont' have any money."

I actually had never asked that turbo question before. I was always into the NA engine and thought I could make a 200hp one pretty easily. After doing all the bolt-ons I could find and gaining 10hp I figured out the truth about engine building.
I started then doing research on how a turbo engine works and the specs on the L28 turbo. Without having to even ask any questions like that one above, I knew the best way was to use a real turbo engine.

My knowledge has come from the last 8 years of working on my own 4 and 6cyl L-series engines. I've had the 1982 280ZX all these years but during this time I've had two Datsun trucks, two 280Z's, one other 280ZX, and the Fairlady Z that I never work on. Oh, and lots of zcar.com reading. Back in 1997 zcar.com was basically the only online Z-car resource. That's one of the reasons I started my own web site. Now my site never gets worked on but I hope to add some good info soon.

I love 280Z's! For a projeKt car I am going to buy one paint it black and do an RB26DETT engine swap in it It will be the meanest Z in Texas. Porsche's are nice, id take it as a big complament But I would take a Z over a Porsche anyday.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the RB26DETT engine. Is it off the Skyline in Japan? If so, is it legal in California and how do I get one?

tis true that vipers could kick its ***, viper can kick many asses...but REALLY...are you going to spend 85000+(70k for used a year or 2) rather than 25 to 30 and be able to whoop the vipers ***...Nissan is not to be undermined....yes viper is great, but for that kinda money i could buy like 10Zs and have every one of them be able to whoop the vipers ***...just food for thought..

Bleach, it appeared to me that you were always getting asked the question of how to turbo a non-turbo for cheap - and I was also commenting on your immense knowledge in the field. My apologies, seeing that it came out wrong ...

I have a tendency to say things that mean one thing to me, and something completely different to others. Now that I think back on what I was really trying to say ... I can't figure it out

Anywho ...

Alright, that's ok. I think the questions also stem from the myth that there are tons of turbo Hondas out there and that they hardly spent any money on their turbo setup. Most of those guys that have really fast Hondas spent $8-10,000 on their engine. You can spend less than half that on a 280zx turbo engine and have a way faster car that is more reliable.

The only problem is when a person's budget is $200.

I would definitely have to agree with that statement, and I mean it to be true. My father offered me a 71 Porsche 914 as well as my 72 240Z, and I took the Z. It was one of the best decisions I could have made, because I love the body style, and the Z can get up and go like nothing else.

Amen to that man, Z's rock, and to me they are the best cars out there. Aside from a Lamborghini Countach with a v-12! Of course untouchable in my lifetime LOL! Anyway I own 2 Z's, and I want another, but got to finish my current ones! I would like a 280z with a 5-speed sometime! Patience is a virtue!

I wasn't offered both, but it was one or the other. My father has another porsche 914 in our driveway, just needs to be fixed up.

You know, Fast240Z, that could be an awesome project. I read of an extensive engine swap of a built supercharged LS1 into the extremely light 914. 500-600 hp in a car that light was supposedly a rocket that had wheels and turned.

I wish I could drive my Z to school everyday but unfortunately I took the motor out. I'm 16 and can't wait to drive my Z. Everyone says they are really fun to drive but I havn't beeen lucky enough to drive it. Like all the rest of you I can't stand stupid rich kids. OH look wut dad bought! When I hear that I think wut good does that do for them. I have to work for everything that I want. Currently I drive an 87 STOCK Toyota pick-up and everyone tells me to lift it and do this that and the other and I think why then I'm like the rest of you. I love my truck but I wish every day that I can drive my Z soon. Glad to know that I'm not the only 16 year old here....

I've also heard of it as well, I just wouldn't do it, the porsche is one hell of a car, but the Z is better.

You got it fast240z, like I have said before, it's not what it's worth to the general public's eye. But what it is worth to you. And in my opinion, Z's are pretty much the best all around sportscars out there. Of course Porsches are nice, my uncle in Frisco has the same lime green, '71 I think 914 since it was new, drives it around daily. Anyway love those Z cars, and this board rocks!

why does one need a porsche emblem to go fast? a Z can go equally as fast, if not faster than a porsche

point is.. the Z is the best sports car period.... and you get alot more bang for your buck....
you CAN go buy a $50k+ sports car and go really fast OR
you CAN go buy a $500 hoppy-jaloppy Z and spend maybe $3k and go just as fast

you do the math....
