Dont rule the ECU out yet fellow ZX Buddy
I had the same problem for a while for my ZX which got started today (loves the L28)
Now this is what i did..
1. Checked the fuse box (was a fuse blown i replaced and made no differnce but ahwell)
2. Battery terminals - one was f$$ked all corroded even after i cleaned it no diffrence. check the earth lead and the lead onto the start even know it spins over she might not get enough current..injectors wont pulse unless there is sufficent current i use a Landcruiser to jump it
3. Took the left hand inside panel off to expose the ECU and took the plug off blowed it out a little and made sure there was no bent wires and put it back in..
4. Made sure all the other connections around the car where clean and working ( if they are not the ECU will go to limp mode and not pulse the injectors)
Hope that gives you something to work over..
