1979 280zx <--> RWHP ????
#2
Well, I've heard a lot of different stories on this one...........
Seems like the stock RWHP is between 135 and 153, depending on who you talk to. I don't have any factory specs on this issue, so I can't verify.
Nissan (Datsun) likes to post main crank HP for some reason. You can take off about 10-15 HP from that and get a fair ballbark figure on how a perfectly stock L28 motor runs. Other Z's seem to vary more.........the new 350Z is posted @ 285 HP and dynos around 222 - 225 RWHP ---- stock.
If you REALLY want to know what you have.........spend the $$$ (about $40.00 here in Dallas) and get a dyno run. Some Nissan/Z clubs can get you a discount on a dyno run as well.
Hope this helps a little.

The 280Z is listed at 170hp which is the crank power.
The listed hp for the 280zx 1979-80 is 135hp at the wheels and a well-tuned engine should get that kind of power. The later 81-83 280zx is 145hp at the wheels. Both have about 165-175lbs of torque at the wheels.
I've seen lots of 350Z dynos in the 240-245hp range at the wheels. With $5000 in bolt-ons you can get another 15hp!

I heard 145-165rwhp for the ZX n/a and 180-210rwhp for the turbo varient.
Im sure my car will only pass a mild 120rwhp or so if i am lucky but a dyno run is 12months down the road
But 140 odd hp is a decent platform.. pitty these engines didnt rev a little harder i assume thats because of the longish stroke. but they make alot of torque

I really wouldn't say its that long of a stroke. My truck's L18 is almost exactly the same stroke and that thing redlines at 6500.
I think its all in the cam. You just put in a longer duration cam and make sure you have enough fuel in the upper rpm range.... then revv it to 7 grand. The L20b has a longer stroke than the L28 and it goes fine to 6000 rpm.

Unless you got a different L28, I know the L20b is the only L-series with a taller block. The timing chain set/front cover is interchangable between the L16, L18, L24, L26, L28. The L20b has a taller front cover and longer timing chain to account for the taller block.
