Hot stick shift on a 83 280zx?
Hey folks,
Thanks so much for the great introduction to the forums on my previous post. I've been servicing my 83 280zx for a bit now and I have a quick question.
Is it normal for the stick shift in a 83 280zx to get hot? or really warm?
I may need to flush the transmission fluid out of the car. I know that there are two plugs at the base of the transmission (a drain and refill bolt).
Would there be anything else I would need to change and look at? such as filters for the transmission? I'm not really a tranny guy, but I don't want to fork $200 just yet for a full tranny flushing at some shop.
Also, any recommendations on tranny fluid from your guys' experience?

you got a slush box or a fivespeed. manual trannies don't have filters. always be sure to take the fill plug out first. it is hell to drain it and then can't fill it cause you can't get the plug out. if gear shift getting really hot you might look for an exhaust leak. I use Red line in all my z's and it will make even a sticky tranny shift better. if you got a five speed and someone is trying to sell you a tranny flush see if you have a 2/0 fish hook hanging out the side of your mouth.

I bought a pump to manually pump the tranny/gear oil into the transmission, so all I have to do now is drain it and refill it using the pump.
Have you pulled the center console to make sure the rubber underboot is tight? Have you checked the heat shield? Have you checked for an exhaust leak?
Just an FYI... transmissions get hot... that's the reality here people.
