help please

My son recently purchased a 1980 280z and noticed that the head gasket was bad ( it was blowing some white smoke) so he decided to replace the head gasket>and while it was torn down he decided to replace the timing chain. He set the cam and crank at TDC when installing the new chain and now it wont stay running or idle unless you keep giving it gas.Can anyone help.It ran fine before we changed the chain

Welcome to ZDriver!

There are many chances to make a "woops" that deep in if you aren't following the procedure step by step. More than anything, it sounds like (and is the usual mistake) the distributor drive shaft is a tooth off, making the timing off. Check all the alignments to see where the distributor timing is.

Make sure you have the FSM from XenonS130 to set it up correctly
