drop your tranny and see what happend.. soulds like youll need a new flywheel and starter.. you might have metal chips from the busted teeth of your flywheel all in your clutch as well.. best way to see what happend is to drop your tranny out and have a look see...

grinding
I would pull the starter first and check conditon of it and the ring gear on the flywheel. Start gear may still be stuck out there and noise may be it dragging. If ring is bad not sure if they can be replaced or not, I have replaced them before on other flywheels but not a Z, unless you have a automatic then it must be replaced........................

I don't know what car you have, but I've got a couple of good 280zx starters that I'd sell you one for $10 plus shipping. e-mail me at datsun280zxt@sbcglobal.net if you're interested. I don't check back here real often.

Also, check your ignition switch! It is supposed to spring back into the ON position after the car is started.
If you can determine that just the rear connector is bad, you can buy those at imporedcarparts.com for about $30. I got one recently to fix a bad connection. Its so nice to have a switch that works properly!
