External Wastegate

I just got done searching the forum on an external wastegate setup and how to, but didn't anything, so I'm wondering if anyone knows how to do an external wastegate on the Turbo L28. I have a T3/T4 Turbo on right now. Which one is a good one? What is needed to do this external wasategate? Thanks.

Lifegrddude has an external wastegate. There are a couple ways to do it.

#1... Take a plazma cutter to the stock exhaust manifold & cut a hole to weld on the wastegate pipe.

#2... Make a "manifold to turbo" adapter that's about 2" thick & cut a hole in the bottom for the wastegate pipe.

#3... Make your own exhaust manifold runners & collector, with a wastegate pipe.

With the adaptor, does a large turbo clear the steering arm?
I see it is angled up a little... hope that's enough

Yeah, it just needs to bypass the turbocharger. Usually it's run back into the downpipe. Lifegrddude has his dumping to the atmosphere... which is loud at full boost.

There's lots of info on the web about internal / external wastegates & which should be used for a specific motor. Also, you should read the book "MAXIMUM BOOST."

Mine is internal. Works fine for me on a street driven car. As far as clearance using the adapter, that has to be worked out for each individual application.

An open wastegate dump sounds like a wild banshee at full boost

Hi, yes I'm using an external wastegate. It's mounted on the #6 runner of the manifold which isn't optimal, but I didn't buy a prefabbed spacer for the wastegate at the collector, and I didn't have lots of clearance with the steering. Not to mention trying to route a pipe away from the rubber boots of the tension rods. (I would have if I'd been allowed to weld, but I can't in this neighborhood) If I could do it over, I'd mount it at the collector. As long as you're not getting boost creep or unstable boost, an internal is fine because an external gate that's vented is friggin loud. Don't vent it next to a concrete median divider with the window down, your ears will thank you.

Cool thanks, has it been easy doing it for you? I will be swapping my motor into the 280Z maybe next weekend, if not for sure the following. I was thinking about doing this external wastegate while the motor is out. I will be Mega Squirting it too with the swap.

Is there any negative downside to venting to atmosphere (like how a BOV venting to atmosphere messes with the A/F)?

Its pretty easy,I will go snap some pictures shortly, and I wouldnt do it with the motor out of the car because its hard to test fit everything, and its all a real tight fit, atleast in an S130.

60mm=3inches. I highly doubt a dsm would benefit from a 3 inch diameter wastegate. That's bigger that his main exhaust pipe.
