ok Ive had my 79 280zx for about 6months now. and about a week ago the alternater stoped charging the batery so i figured the alternater is shot ill just get a new one easy enough right? wrong. sudenly the thing started working again and its been going on like that for about a week ... sometimes it works somtimes it doesnt .. im just about baffled please help
to me it sounds like either an alternator that is going bad or simply a loose charging wire. try this, start your car, let it idle far about a min. then disconnect the positive terminal from the battery. if the car stays running smooth, then your alt. is good.
if it runs any rougher or dies completely, then you need a new alternator. as far as the battery goes. if it is expired then chances are that you need one. also if you live in an area where the tempratures fluctuate from extremes, i.e. 30' to 90' in a short period of time this will kill your battery faster than the normal life of it.

Sounds like the regulator is shot. Take the alternator in and have it rebuilt or repaired. If the alternator is charging intermittantly I doubt that the brushes are shot as it wouldn't charge at all. If you have a digital voltmeter and you can get the car running watch the voltage and see if it fluctuates. Normal voltage should be 13.5-14.7 V with the ar running.
