Electrical issues.
So, my brilliant self left my lights on while I was out shooting for 4 hours. Needless to say when I got back to the Datsun, it was dead as can be. So I had my buddy try and jump my car off and about 15 seconds into it I see smoke coming from the fuse box next to the battery which I believe is where my EGI fuse is. The battery has quiet a bit of corrosion on it, so i'm not sure if that has anything to do with it, but when I looked in the box the EGI fuse/wire was burnt to a crisp and the wire seemed to be jerry rigged on there. It's a 82 280zx and i've had it for about 2 weeks, so i'm sure i'll find more things like that on the car. Any ideas from anyone? Obviously i'm going to replace the battery and i'm going to need to do something about that wire job. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Dave.

You can download the Factory Service Manual FSM at this site. It has a wire diagram and schematics. You most likely melted a Fusible Link, so you will need a replacement. Motorsport! Fusible Links & Covers - The Z Store, Nissan-Datsun 240Z-260Z-280Z-280ZX-300ZX(Z31/Z32)-350Z-370Z Parts

Corrosion
Thinking about your first question, current will follow the path of least resistance. So if your terminal was so badly corroded that no current was getting to the battery, then the Fusible link heated up as the current had no where to go but the hot side of the circuit.
