Now, should I reinstall the heat shield that goes between the intake manifold and the exhaust?

I don't know how important it is, but I left the heatshield that goes between intake/exhaust, for one part I stripped some of the bolts and had a hard time getting it off, but I just figured I might be better off leaving that heatshield, at least for me especially because I had a turbo right under the intake.

taint to big of a deal, you could always heat wrap the headers.

Yeah that heat shield is no big deal. I have run without one, with headers on my '81 and '82. With no heating issues whatsoever.
