Diving into header install (with pics)

Started out pulling off the intake and stock manifold, nothing too exciting, except I found a couple missing bolts on the intake side and a sheared off stud on the exhaust side.

The one thing I'm concerned with is that some of the cylinders seem to be running lean. There are barely any carbon deposits on the #1, #3, &#6 exhaust runners. How big of a problem could I be looking at here?

Both manifolds are off, thats one greasy motor.

Taking a closer look at the header, I noticed there are 2 ports, one for the o2 sensor and one for the EGR. It so happens my Z doesn't have the EGR system. I called MSA and the guy on the phone was trying to convince me that my Z must have an EGR system because all 280zx's came with it. My car is a 1980 model and unless someone swapped out the stock intake and exhaust in the past (doesn't seem that way) then my car never had an EGR system. My question now is, what should I do to plug up the EGR port on the header? What is the thread count on the nut - is it possible to find a fat bolt and just bolt that port shut?

... The guy at MSA was right.

No EGR means that somebody at some time in the past removed it...

007max... post a pic of your intake manifold.

SHADY280 07-06-2007 07:18 PM

i put a bolt in mine, the only thing is i forgot the count for the threads. you can get them at a specialty hardware store, not jus the regular autoparts places. take the header with you, they can measure it there, and get you the correct bolt.

not necessarily it could also be a euro engine or as we do NOT have egr from the factory! however we never got that head (n47 with the 'evil' exhaust liners). but just bolt it up and be done with it :)

I forget what, but I heard that there was a rarer intake that came off the 280ZX cars that didn't have an EGR valve. It was the P-82 intake that came out of a 280ZX. From what I can gather at least from HybridZ is that many of the 79' and 80' ZX intake manifolds were EGRless for some reason. I don't know if these people were from other countries I didn't pay attention to their locations, but my guess is your car hasn't been necessarily switched.

I know that my '79 has an EGR but no O2 sensor. Here are pics of my 1979 EGR Intake, stock as far as I know.

EGR's piss me off. lol, but yeah post pics of your intake manifold. and teh numbers stamped on it

007max 07-09-2007 08:35 AM

Pictures of the intake and exhaust manifolds. The exhaust only has one port for the o2 sensor.

Looks like 007 is lucky and has the P-82 EGR-less intake.

NismoPick 07-09-2007 08:38 AM

^^^ and there it is! :107:

Damn you guys are quick!

So, does anyone know what size bolt I need to plug that EGR port? I already have the header mounted and I don't feel like taking it out to go shopping for bolts at Lowe's :120:

snwbrderphat540 07-09-2007 09:41 AM

lol, why not, its cool walking around with headers, be like yeah, this is only one, its a V12 bitches! lol

007max 07-09-2007 09:57 AM

That'd be funny shit, however, it's already on the car and hooked up to the exhaust.

Time to go put on the intake and reconnect all those vacuum lines :tear:

Here's the amazing plug we ended up using to plug off the exhaust side of the EGR. It was all we could find in my friend's garage that fit.

260zturbo 07-09-2007 11:16 AM

didnt want to weld it closed?

duowing 07-09-2007 11:19 AM

Naa, the bolt is much cooler, and I don't know the slightest bit about welding.

Know what size bolt that could be? I really don't want to take the exhaust manifold back off to go shopping for one.

snwbrderphat540 07-09-2007 01:05 PM

know what i did? i just cut the EGR pipe in half and bent the ends so they were air tight. ill find me a bolt some other time

260zturbo 07-09-2007 03:23 PM

well at least u get a a+ for effort

snwbrderphat540 07-09-2007 03:39 PM

i should get an A+ for effort, had had to bend that biotch by hand, that metal is thicker than you would think lol...

im actually not gonna replace that, im going to just get a better down pipe

CWHammer 07-11-2007 06:51 PM

How bout this - shoot me an address, I'll send you the nut from an extra EGR tube I have and you can tap it for for what ever bolt you can find that will fit.:icon_super:

duowing 07-11-2007 07:02 PM

I believe the head of it was 7/8ths or something right around that.
