Car revs to 2k then drops to 100 then back to idle.

Hey all,

If I rev to over 2k it cuts out and drops down to near death and then (sometimes) returns to 900 idle. It also takes a few tries to get it started.

It just started doing this and isn't drivable because of it. Last week it cut out a couple times but drove fine afterwards.

I'm guessing this is an ignition system problem. Could it be anything to do with my fuel pump/filter?

What are my best bets to check?

Thanks for any info.

my car did this, adjust the idle speed closer to arround 1k and see what happens.

i dont know what the nominal idle speed is in this car but it fixed my rev problem

according to FSM idle speed is 700 RPM + or - 100 RPM
Haynes I believe says 750 RPM + or - 100 RPM

But generally around 700-800 is the normal idle

Your TPS (Throttle Position Switch) is wet... This is the MOST common 280ZX issue in history and has been covered well here. the "Search" feature is your friend.

Remove the plug from the top of the TPS and dry out the contacts on the TPS and the plug (Compressed air works great if you have some.) Spraying electrical contact cleaner is a good idea also.

This usually happens after:

A: Getting the bright idea to wash your motor and engine compartment.

or

B: Leaving the hood up before it rains...

ok so when it was cold i wacked it with a screw driver and the RPM went up a little but but i was un able to adjust the idle speed, then when it warmed up the idle speed went even further up so i adjusted it down to about 725RPM, that was at about 3pm, i drove arround town untill about 4:30 pm i went to check it and it kinda dips a little but its at 725 rpm still but it wasnt completely cold.

when its cold when i move the adjustment screw the idle shouldnt change right?

eh, i'll check it out later tonite and see, i may need to pop it off and hose some WD-40 in there or something.

300zx/maximas have a similar device only when its cold you cant adjust the idle speed very much, alot of turning only gains or loses a few RPMs but theres a way to fix them when they go bad:

some one mensioned some place else new reg's have an adjutment screw, was that 280's or 300's?

Yep -- was the afm

Cleaned it out and moved the circuitboard up a bit and now the car runs 20000% better!

While it was off I noticed a **** load of gunk inside the intake manifold -- what's the best way to clean it up a bit without pulling it off? (all my vacuum lines will die if touched)

NA's have a cold start valve, not a fast idle like the turbo cars.

ok so i poked, the flappy thingy inside was sticking when it would get hot and not move so i poked and wiggled and hosed it with WD-40 and it seems to be good now. i bent the tabs on the connector to get a better connection but i have yet to find any crusty green connections.

my idle isnt steady any more but mabe now that something workin its time to re adjust or something else needs poking
