alternator alzheimers

i have an 81 280zx i've owned for around 15 years. i replaced the alternator and noticed a single wire connecting the batt and ground(E) on the back of the alternator. on said wire is some sort of a capasitor or regulator, just a small metal cylinder. is this the proper connection or was it hooked up wrong? do i really need it? any help is appreciated.

Welcome to ZDriver!

It's an RF capacitor. It's not absolutely needed, but if it's still there, just leave it there. It helps reduce radio interference.
