AFM and turbo
AFM and turbo
i have and 83 280zx turbo that i took the old turbo off and was trying to by-pass the system so that i could just drive it to a shop for a whole new system to be put on. I took off the afm also, but then put it back on and when i put everything back together by-passing turbo it started up but sounded like it was flooding and died from loss of air. Is it possible to run without an AFM on allowing more air? and if not would the turbo being off cause it to not get a strong enough air flow to run?
Why did you take off the turbo? How did you reconnect the exhaust?
No. The AFM is the load sensor (the MAIN sensor of EVERY EFI system). Without it, the ecu has no idea how much air is going in to the engine.
You have a gaping hole in your intake.

I took off the turbo because it would sometimes not spool at all and the waste gate was rusted shut. Once I got it off I also saw that some of the blades were chipped. I didn't reconnect the exhaust, I figured that it should be able to run just open, was I wrong to do that?? I made a temporary tube to run from my air intake to my down pipe to by-pass the turbo so there isn't a whole in my intake. I'm not sure if that's the right way to do it though
I put up some pics but all I have is an iPod to take with so quality isn't great. But what I did was hooked up AFM like normal, and took the down pipe that goes from intake to turbo and connected it to the pipe that runs from the AFM to turbo. I thought that it would just direct air to intake but by-pass where it would normally go to turbo.
