280z tranny in my 83 280zxt???
I have access to a 280z w/ a 5 speed and the guy is scrapping the whole car and he gave me a hell of a deal on everything I would need to swap my car to a five speed. I know it would work but is it ok to use a N/A tranny and from an older car. I dont have any performance mods but driving an automatic is killing my Z fever!!!! So I would think that 280 z tranny would hold up to my stock turbo motor?
There's quite a few people that say the n/a tranny is better than the turbo T5 Borg Warner... tho I have personal experience of my n/a tranny not holding up to the L28ET... I like the T5 over the n/a. But if you're dying to switch to a manual, go for it!
Everyone that I've ever talked to about an automatic to manual transmission swap says it's simply not worth the time and effort. At least you would have all the parts you would need, well assuming that the difference between a first and second gen isn't too great but, if it is then you might as well grab another parts car.
It's most people's opinion though that an automatic transmission is better for a turbo car anyways because you won't lose boost inbetween shifts as you would with a manual but, it's also most people's opinion that automatics are just no fun.
Just know that you've been warned, it's a hell of a lot of work although I don't speak from experience so it's not worth much.

strange that you read that. A local guy here with an 81 turbo swapped out his auto for an NA 5-speed. He said it is like night and day. the manual transmission is SOOOOO much BETTER! More power, better economy, more fun to drive.
That transmission will go in. You will need 280ZX pedals though. You'll need the whole pedal assembly that they bolt to as well. I have that set setting out by the garbage can... it is the assembly that holds them but is missing the clutch and brake pedals. (81 black has 'em) anyway, if you need it let me know. Just pay for shipping. you'll have to locate some 280ZX pedals local to you.
Pleas note that there is a difference between 280Z and 280ZX pedals.

Im just talking about the actual swap but it wouldn't be hard to imagine that on our older simpler car it'd be easier, most of the people talking have late model vehicles such as mustang gt's, f bodies, honda's, etc.
Well the guy scrapt the whole car yesterday. Hybrids130, I did a tranny swap from auto to manual on my brothers s13, it was not to bad just took a weekend. And another thing is the three speed auto hinders the performance of the car and no top end gear at all, at 70mph in third im doing 4,000rpms, THAT SUCKS!!!!! Bleach, I would really like that pedal assembly, could you find out how much the shipping is and PM me bout it? Paypal? Do you have any other five speed parts you are looking to get rid of or sell? I would rather put in a borg warner T5 but have not fould a turbo parts car yet? Now Im back to where I started with zero 5 speed parts and a slushbox. Bleach how did you like those springs and kybs? I just got my ST springs and waiting on the struts. Thanx for the info guys!!!
